Surnames/Apellidos

I have found a baptism record that lists the father as Ramon Becerra, and the paternal grandparents as Alejandro Becerra and Aurelia Garcia. However, on a military document, Ramon is listed as Ramon Becerra Franco. Is it likely that he's Ramon Becerra Franco Garcia, and the "Franco" was part of his father's surname? I'm having difficulty finding any additional documents about Ramon or his parents.

Gabay or Gabai: origin of surname

Has anyone been able to find from which side of the family did Ana Francisca and Maria Gabay got their surname? I have tried to find that surname among Spanish surnames with little success. However, I have found that Gabay or Gabai is a Jewish surname. Further I learned that Gabay is a person that performs duties similar to an usher. Here is a description:

"In Judaism, a person who helps to organize the running of a synagogue service; one or more gabai may be involved. Duties include welcoming visitors, ensuring that everyone has a siddur (prayer book), organizing the seating arrangements, and choosing the congregants who will open the ark or read from the Torah. The gabai will also ensure that the wine is present for the kiddush, a prayer recited over wine before it is shared by the congregation."

Any ideas?

Iron Curtain

I've run into an Iron Curtain with my 4th GGF Diego Martin Flores. He was born probably abt 1730 and died 27 Jul 1808 in Colotlan. He married my 4th GGM Gertrudis Leano. de la Torre (Montelongo)who died 15 Feb 1772 in Colotlan. I believe their fist child was Jose Agapito Flores b. 15 Mar 1754 in Colotlan, Jalisco. Together they had 8 children that I know of.

Diego Martin Flores remarried on 3 Jul 1772 Colotlan with Maria Felipa De La Encarnacion Enriquez naturale child of Maria Manuela De La Luz Enriquez. Felipa has been referred occassionally with "De Mier" surname. Together with Diego Martin Flores they had at least 10 children with the eldest Juan Paulino Flores b. Jul 1773 in Colotlan.

I have looked at Diego's photo-film records of his 18 children's baptisms, his death record, his marriage record with Felipa and there is no mention of who his parents were. I even looked for a photo-record marriage testamony prior to his marriage with Felipa BUT could not find one.

I've tried several parishes from Zacatecas and Jalisco but came up empty.
Does anyone out there have any suggestions??

Matching results in IGI index to "images" of records online

I found a possible match (Maria "Virginia" Fernandez, born 04 Jul 1885 to Pantaleon Fernandez and Marianna/Maceana Macias) in the IGI index with the christening listed as San Francisco de Asís, Tizapán el Alto, Jalisco, Mexico, when searching for my husband's great-grandmother. However, when I "browse" the online records for San Francisco de Asís, Tizapán el Alto that are available, I can find the correct baptisim year, but she doe not seem to be in the book. I found this with her sister Maria Jacinta Fernandez as well. I did inquire at Familly Search.org, and they inidcated that those records were indexed, but not online yet. Wouldn't the San Francisco de Asís, Tizapán el Alto, baptism images online be the same as those in the film?

I will certainly order the film, but was a bit confused since I expected the images of the baptism books from San Francisco de Asís, Tizapán el Alto to be the same in any format.

be aware of some names in the IGIs

I've found a few errors in the names of some IGIs.

There are some IGIs with names which INCLUDE their place of residence. i.e. I've found many names like Jose MARIA DE LA TORRE (plus the surnames)in which the Indexer mistakenly ADDED their residence (Maria De La Torre)as part of their name! Of course there are many OTHER names and residences this has occurred.

If the name looks "odd" in comparison to their parents, it's better to look at the actual digital image of that event. This is a good way to eliminate duplicate people.

$99 DNA test

Joseph I was trying to post to the announce list but this computer is not
cooperating.

I ordered the Comprehensive Genome test and joined the project that was
mentioned on the list.

Would I be able to verify that any connection to you or Gloria through the
test?

Since both my parents are still living (86 & 90 years old) would it be a
clearer picture overall if I tested them too with the $99 tests?

I am trying outlook now to see if it works.
