The SAR cordially invites you to participate in our trip to Spain to
honor Spain's assistance during the American Revolutionary War. We're
meeting the King of Spain and conducting a Charter celebration for the
new SAR Society in Spain. We're paying homage to Gen. Bernardo Galvez in
his home town, and at the Malaga Cathedral, where he was successful in
obtaining the money they had saved up to build the south tower of the
cathedral.

Details of the trip are as follows:
Please join us for the SAR trip to Spain from May 10 - 20, 2010. Group
airline rates from Washington, DC are available. Stay in outstanding
hotels, and enjoy delicious Spanish food. In Madrid, we are scheduled to
have an audience with King Juan Carlos, who is an SAR member. The tour
includes visits to the Royal Palace, Royal Armory, Army Museum, Navy
Museum, Plaza Mayor, and the incomparable Prado Museum. While in Madrid
we will visit El Escorial, burial site of ancient Spanish Royalty, and
scenic Toledo, where the finest steel swords in the world are made. In
Madrid there will be a reception at the US Embassy, where hopefully we
will visit with the US Ambassador to Spain.
By train and bus we travel to Macharaviaya, the home town of General
Bernardo Galvez for a celebration, followed by a ceremony at the Malaga
Cathedral, where the church donated their fund for the construction of
the South Tower to Gen Galvez. These funds were used for arms and
ammunition to protect the Mississippi River and Gulf Coast from the
British during the Revolutionary War. In Malaga visits are also planned
to Gibralfaro Castle and the Old Quarter.
In Granada we will visit the incomparable Alhambra Palace, where we will
gain insight into the lives of the Moors, who conquered most of Spain
and occupied it for 700 years. On the Costa Del Sol, there will be time
for swimming, shopping, or leisure strolls along the boardwalk. Also
included is a visit to scenic Rhonda. En route we stop to view the
construction of the brig Galveztown.
Consider an extra few days on the post trip extension which will allow
time for visits to historic Gibraltar, and exotic Tangier, Morocco. To

Madrid—Malaga
May 10—20 , 2010
Compatriots,
Please join us for a wonderful 10 day trip to Spain, May 10-20, 2010. We
will visit the Cathedral in Malaga, where the church members donated the
money for the second tower of the church to Gen Bernardo Galvez, for
guns, ammunition, and supplies to fight the English up the Mississippi
and along the Gulf Coast. There will be time for lounging on the beach
along the Costa Del Sol. Savor the scenic side trips in the south of
Spain to the exotic Alhambra Palace near Granada; enjoy a celebration in
the small home town of Gen. Galvez; delight in the magnificent vista
from Rhonda, historic Gibraltar, and an optional day trip to explore
Tangier, Morocco.
In Madrid tour the Royal Palace and Armory, and hopefully have an
audience with SAR member King Juan Carlos. In Madrid we will visit the
incomparable Prado Museum, see El Cid’s huge sword at the Army Museum
and marvel at the ship models in the Naval Museum. There will be time
for a casual stroll through the magnificent Plaza Major, where you can
savor some tapas. Side trips include visits to historic Toledo and
stately Escorial, burial place of many Spanish kings.
An optional tour to Costa del Sol is offered.
Consult your tax advisor about the deductibility of this trip for
members of the SAR and members of the SAR Ladies Auxiliary.

The itinerary planned for the Spain program is shown below. Please note
changes are possible until the official visits are confirmed.
ITINERARY
Monday, May 10—Depart U.S.A. for Spain.
Tuesday, May 11—Arrive Madrid. Transfer from airport to hotel. Check in
at the InterContinental Hotel. Afternoon at leisure followed by Welcome
Reception in evening.
Wednesday, May 12—City tour of Madrid including Royal Palace, the Armory
and Old Quarter. Lunch at local restaurant. Afternoon tour of Army &
Navy Museum. View trophies, flags, uniforms, weapons and scale-models
describing the history of Spain’s armed forces. Reception hosted by Navy
League followed by dinner on your own.
Thursday, May 13—Morning visit to the U.S. Embassy followed by excursion
to El Escorial. Explore the most magnificent Monastery of Spain from
where King Philip II ruled the world. Lunch is included. Tour concludes
with wreath ceremony at El Escorial. Audience with Royal Family. Evening
at leisure.
Friday, May 14—Full day tour to Toledo, one of the most delightful
cities of Spain. The wealth of its impressive artistic and cultural
legacy makes it one of the most unique cities in Europe. Visit the
Cathedral, Jewish Quarter and Santo Tome Church. Lunch included. Evening
at leisure.
Saturday, May 15—Day at leisure. Special Dinner at a private club.
Sunday, May 16—Transfer from hotel to train station. Depart Madrid for
Antequera by high-speed train. Transfer to Granada. Enjoy lunch before
tour to the Alhambra. This unique building is a fortress, residence and
royal city all in one. Transfer to Malaga. Check in at the Malaga
Palacio Hotel. Evening at leisure.
Monday, May 17—Full day excursion to Macharaviaya. Visit this old
farming village where in 1786 the villagers dedicated a monument to the
Galvez family to express their gratitude. Ceremony with plaque to honor
General Bernardo Galvez followed by official lunch. Evening at leisure.
Tuesday, May 18—Morning reception with Malaga Town Council followed by
tour of Malaga. Visit Gibralfaro Castle and Old Quarter. Lunch at local
restaurant. Public ceremony at the Cathedral and presentation of a
Plaque of Honor. Dinner hosted by the Convention Bureau of Costa del Sol.
Wednesday, May 19—Full day excursion to Ronda.
En route stop at shipyard to view the brig Galveztown under construction
to be completed in May 2011.
Explore the historic quarter reminiscent of the Arab age and more
“modern” Ronda built after the 16th century. Lunch at local restaurant.
Farewell Dinner.
Thursday, May 20—Transfer to Malaga airport for your return flight to
the U.S. via Madrid or continue by coach to Costa Del Sol on Post
Program Tour.

SPLENDOR OF SPAIN
When you think of Spain you'll most likely picture bullfights, beaches
and flamenco dancing, but although these do capture the very essence of
Spain, this vibrant country has a whole lot more to offer.
Madrid, the capital of Spain since 1562, is a city of great monuments.
Among its highlights are the medieval center, dating back to the
Habsburg Empire, and the Prado Museum. But Madrid is not just a cultural
destination. It is also a lively metropolis with many pubs, cafes,
discotheques and nightclubs open late into the night.
Malaga, inhabited for more than 2,000 years by different Mediterranean
civilizations, combines today its traditions with modernity. Stretching
below the watchful eye of the Castle of Gibralfaro is a lively and
bustling city with neighborhoods of rich Andalusian flavor.

Fuerte Marbella. Rest of day at leisure.

Saturday, May 22—Day at leisure. Optional tour to Tangier, Morocco.

COSTA DEL SOL
The most all year round tourist destination in Europe, Costa del Sol has
numerous magnificent well-kept beaches. The average water temperature is
65º F ( and 75º F in August).
There is also much to see away from the beach. Miles of unspoiled and
protected countryside peppered with white villages. The mountains back
the coast: Montes de Malaga, Serania de Ronda, Sierra Blanca, Sierra
Bermeja, Concha Mountain. They are covered with a diverse range of
flora. Here you can enjoy nature and the hospitality of the White villages.
RESERVATION REQUIREMENT:
SAR Honoring Spain: Mail the enclosed reservation form with your deposit
to MAGIC Meetings at the address below. A deposit of $200 per person is
required to reserve space on the Program visiting Madrid and Malaga.
Post Tour to Marbella: An additional deposit of $100 per person is
required to reserve space on Post Tour. Include your deposit in the
check for the Main Program.

CANCELLATION POLICY
Deposit is refundable in full up to July 15, 2009 for SAR Honoring Spain
program and the Post Tour to Costa del Sol. Any cancellations received
between July 16, 2009 and February 10, 2010 are charged $100 per person
cancellation fee. Cancellations received between February 11 and March
10, 2010 will be charged $450 per person cancellation fee. Between March
11 and April 10, 2010 the fee is 75% the full cost of trip. No refunds
are made after April 11, 2010.
