I just wanted to let everyone know, that Family Search has uploaded quite a few of the parish records for Jalisco, to FamilySearch.org . I am not sure of how extensive they are, but there quite a few cities listed. And I have only checked out Ciudad Guzman and Sayula. but for those 2 cities, it almost has the entire collection.

Hello Raquel (prima),
I have also found that some of my folks were not administered last rights due to "por la violencia de su muerte" - or - "por ser su muerte violenta"...

I don't think it means the a person was murdered, per se, but rather it was a term used when the death was sudden and unexpected. The cases that I've found referred to cases of: 1) died giving birth, 2) died of sudden sickness, and 3) drowning or a similar act that brought sudden death and the priest didn't arrive in time to take confession and administer rights.

I hope this helps.

Amigos,

No creo.

New records for the states of Guanajuato, Michoacan, Morelos, and Puebla were
posted at Family Search today.

Coverage varies for these states (not all towns are included), and not all
records for each posted town are included.

Michoacan is included with Guanajuato.

Salvador,

Thank you for your very well written explanation of how modern Mexico evolved, especially since I don't think English is your first language. Your efforts are much appreciated.

Americans like me whose father came to the US in 1913 at the age of 10 really have a poor understanding of Mexico.

I am going to edit what you wrote to include the exact dates that the various Mexican presidents served (that will force me to learn more Mexican history) and pass it around to others who need a clear and concise telling of the story of Mexico.

Does anybody know if this book is still available anywhere?

Genealogia de Nochistlan, Antiguo Reino de la Nueva Galicia en el Siglo XVII segun sus Archivos Parroquiales."

Author is Jose Luis Vazquez y Rodriguez de Frias.

Gloria,
Thank you for checking for Corbera...
Since I joined NuestrosRanchos, I've been "plowing," through papers, some dating back to 1996 that reference Tino's ancestry. I came across a description/listing of the "capitulos," in the book that you mentioned by Vazquez y Frias. I found one that looked promising, and I would appreciate it if you could/would check it out. I've listed it below...

Genealogia de Nochistlan, by Jose Luis Vazquez y Rodriguez de Frias
Capitulo 30 Descendencia de Lorenzo Mexia viudo de Ines de Estrada.

Many thanks!

Author is Jose Luis Vazquez y Rodriguez de Frias. This was privately printed in 2001, with more than 400 pages, and thousands of surnames in the index, and "data from Jalostitlan, Lagos de Moreno, Aguascalientes, Guadalajara, Teocaltiche, Tepatitlan, San Luis Potosi, Michoacan and more."

It sounds similar to the book "Nochistlan Zacatecas - Los Duran, su Parroquia y otras familias antiguas" that Alicia has. If someone has surnames they would like looked up, we'll give it a try. (Sorry, there's no Corbera, I already checked.)

Gloria Delgado

Gloria,

I have both books, Jose Luis' book is mostly Geneaology with a couple of indexes one for all the names and one for the chapters.

The other book, Nochistlan Zacatecas has much historical data with a multitude of Duran family trees and groups of families, some census data for 1879, data on the diocese of Guadalajara, a diagram of the original blueprint of the town of Nochistlan. A diagram of the forts and fortifications that existed in May of 1864 during the battle with the French. It has a list of the political leaders of Nochistlan from 1853-1885. It has land owners and deed holders for the year 1876 and the taxes they paid. It lists all the ranchos that belonged to the curate of Nochistlan in July of 1896. Also listed is a list of all the Presbiters from 1619 through 1693.

It also lists some history of El Teul, Apulco, Juchipila, Yahualica, Mexticacan, Teocaltiche, Jalpa, Tlaltenango, Santa Maria de Los Lagos, Tenayuca, Toyahua, Ichipalco and Aguascalientes.
It has an index for the chapters and unlike Jose Luis' book, it does not have an index for all the names that appear in the book which would be really useful for finding a particular name or person.

Deena Ortiz has volunteered to index the names if I photo copy the pages and forward them to her. First I would like to ask Mr Enrique Legaspi, our new member if his copy is an original and if it is, it might have indexed names.

Thanks Gloria,

George-

Is Luz Montejano's book available? Over a year ago I contacted Borderland Books and was informed that the book was not available, but hopefully soon a re-issuance would occur, and that I would be contacted. No word yet.

Luz Montejano's "Archivo de la Sagrada Mitra de Guadalajara" gives references to the films where she extracted the data in her book. At least some (perhaps all?) of these references are to the LSD Family History Library microfilm numbers.

At least some of the films are now posted with the Guadalajara, Jalisco records. I've looked up a few, and they are in the Guadalajara, Diocese of Guadalajara, Matrimonios group of films.

If you have the microfilm reference from Luz Montejano's book, you can look up the microfilm at the Family Search catalog website (search by film number). This will give you the years covered on the film; from this you can pick the film with this date range.

To make sure you are looking at the right film, the film number that is on the first or second image of the film must be the same as the reference from Sagrada Mitra.

On any given film, the entries are not in chronological order, and they are not indexed. You will need to do a systematic search to find the records of interest. Note that some of the films are long (I looked at one with more than 1200 images!).

For example: I found the record (dated 10 June 1697, Lagos) for the marriage of Nicolas Macias Valades, morisco, hijo natural of Nicolas Macias Valades, Espanol, and Josepha Rincon, mulata libre. Nicolas (the son) was getting married to Antonia de la Fuente de Araujo, Espanola (padres no conosidos). The film is "Matrimonios, 1689-1796" and the record begins at image 60.

I believe that is Velis

Alice,

On second thought, it could be Velis or something similar, because it's so faint
and obscure, it's difficult to decipher what the letters could be.

Alice,

My wild guess would be Manuela Ruis. I looked at the capital R up above where it
states, yo el Presb. D Ramon Valenzuela.

Does Ruis fit in with your current family lines or would this be a new surname?

Hope this helps,

There is a Filomena Vasquez, daughter of Dolores Vasquez and Luciana Crus, baptized 2 Apr 1853, San Cosme, Villa De Cos, Zacatecas. This film is online; details from image 43 are:

Filomena Vasquez, baptized 2 Apr 1853, San Cosme, 15 days old, born in Sierralira
Parents: Dolores Vasquez & Luciana Crus
Paternal grandparents: Bartolo Vasquez & Luisa Acosta
Maternal grandparents: Fabian Crus & Nicolasa Moncivais

Francisca's baptism on 8 Jun 1858, is at image 357 on the same film. Parents/grandparents are the same.

I did not find any other children of Dolores and Luciana.

Hopefully, this is helpful.
