Hi, I am new here and I am trying to find more information on my ancestry and I am trying to get a sense as to where my ancestors are from since my family has no clue as to where we come from.  I have been doing a lot of research for almost 9 months now and have been able to find a lot of interesting stuff that has surprised my whole family however I can not find more information about a specific family.  I am stuck on my 2nd-great grandmother's parents and their family.  Her name was Maria Patrocinio? or Patrocinia? Dimas born on the 17th of September of 1883 and baptized on the 1st of October 1883.  She had a daughter who is my great grandmother named Vicenta Camarena with a man whose name I still don't know besides his last name (Camarena). Maria Patrocinio? or Patrocinia? Dimas moved to the United States and lived in Silver City New Mexico where she re-married to a man named Marcos Acevedo. She was the daughter of Santiago Dimas and Maria De la
Rosa.  Santiago's parents w
ere Macedonio? or Celedonio? Dimas and Petra Ramirez.  Maria De la Rosa (whom which I am more interested in) was the daughter of Juan De la Rosa? or just Rosa? and Victoria De Abila.  So far that is all I know.  I am more interested in Maria De la Rosa and her parents since I want to find my mothers direct maternal lineage.  Thank You to anyone who took the time to read my message and decided to help :)

Hi Linda :) Thank YOU!!! I found the records you listed and that is them. Thank You so much for your help. I actually found more information from the Dimas side of my family through Santiago (my 2nd great grandfather) instead of his wife (Maria Leocadia de la Rosa). I also found his paternal grandparents Victor Dimas and Josefa Rosales along with his maternal grandparents thanks to you (Jose Albino Ramirez and Sotera Mercado.)

there is a child for Albino Ramires and Sotero Mercado, Maria Josefa baptism 9 Oct 1814 in film #439844 but it's a really hard film to follow and I couldn't find it but if you can it should give you another generation.
happy hunting, Linda

Hi Linda once again thank you so much for your help. I checked the website that you listed and it has been very very helpful. I now know more information about my 2nd Great grandmother (Maria Patrocinio Dimas - De la Rosa born on the 17th of September 1883 in Jerez, Zacatecas) and her family. Her parents were (Santiago Dimas - Ramirez born abt. 1844) and (Maria Leocadia De la Rosa - De Avila born abt. 1847 in Jerez, Zacatecas). Since I focused more on just my mother's maternal lineage I found that Maria Leocadia's mother was Maria Victoria De Avila - Gonzalez born on 03 March 1821 in Jerez, Zacatecas. Maria Victoria's parents were Marcial de Avila and Maxima Gonzalez born abt. 1785 and they were both from Jerez, Zacatecas. That is as far as T've gotten, since I could not keep going through just my mom's maternal line since I found the baptism record for Maria Victoria De Avila - Gonzalez (baptized on 11 March 1821 in Jerez) and under her maternal grandparents (Maxima Gonzalez's parents) it says "Abuela no dio razon" and only lists her maternal grandfather as Manuel Gonzalez. I also noticed that they were all from Cienega, Jerez, Zacatecas as far as I have reached with Maxima Gonzalez (1785) my maternal ancestors were there for a very long time since 1785 or maybe longer once I keep finding more people.

good morning. I'm really glad my files were able to help you in your search.  I'm still trying to figure out who in your family married someone in mine.  I only put people in my files that are associated through marriage with mine. I do have lots of family from Cienega and will let you know when I figure it out. My base person is my Dad Chet (Aniceto) Castanon, if you put that in pedigree in text form it will show my lineage from Zacatecas.

Can you share with me the date of Maria Patrocinio Dimas baptism?  I can't find her and would like to add her to the records. What do you have that shows that your Victoria is the same one as the daughter of Marcial and Maxima?

Thank you for taking the time to let me know it helped you, that's why I post them on Rootsweb instead of Ancestry. They are connected but Ancestry charges and Rootsweb does not..

So where was Maria de la Rosa born? do you have the online record? If so
supply the url. I saw some children born to a Juan and Victoria in Jerez
around the 1850's but without a location it is difficult to narrow down the
search. Location is one of your best clues in genealogy.

Hi :) thank you so much for your help and unfortunately no I do not know where Maria de la Rosa was born I only know the information on the post. And actually I only have the record for Refugia Dimas Rosa. I do know that Patrocinia Dimas Rosa was born in Jerez, Zacatecas but that is the only think I forgot to mention on my post. I also just looked for those records you found and yes those are her daughters and I believe then that her name was Maria Leocadia Rosa - Avila since on Patrocinia's baptism record it shows Santiago Dimas and Maria Rosa as her parents and lists the same grandparents shown on Petra Dimas - Rosa's baptism record.

Jerez Baptism/Death/Marriage Records

I plan to take time over the next week to go through the records for late 1600's and early 1700's in Jerez. I will be looking primarily for Rodarte, Caldera, de Avila, and Munoz.

Rudy,

Hello, again, my name is Michael Castro and I just sent an e-mail after seeing your post in a search I did (I punched in 'Huitzila')- Little did I know you actually recently posted again (yesterday!)... I'm so sorry to hear about your computer earlier this summer, that must've been horrible... I just wanted to make sure you don't feel rushed in any way by my request. Thank you for the kind offer, on behalf of us all.

Hello Rudy, I was looking at some old messages and found yours. What a surprise to find you here. Perhaps you don't remember me, but years ago, we found each other at a genealogy forum and found out that we are related through our Curiel family from Atenguillo. In fact, you sent me a scan of my second greatgrandparents' marriage Ygnacio Curiel and Maria de Jesus Pena on January 26 1894. I appreciate that help, since I did not have that info before you provided it to me. I emailed you back, but I never heard from you again. After a while, I discontinued the email address that I was using to communicate. It sure feels good to find another primo here at Nuestros Ranchos.

However, you never mentioned how we are related and who our common ancestor was. I checked your family tree on the database and it does not contain that info.

Now that I know Rodolfo Flores is on nuestrosranchos, I can proudly say that I have FOUR primos on the website: Rodolfo Flores, through our Curiel line, Francisco Sevilla and Alessandro Vitela, through our Apodaca line, and Angel Cervantes, through our Cervantes line, even though we still haven't found our common ancestor but I have a strong belief he's there somewhere.

Anyways, Rodolfo, I hope you reply to this message and let me know how you are doing.

Saludos.

As far as I know there were not Apaches as far south as Zacatecas. All of the ethnographic literature points to the relevant ethnic groups being:
- Zacatecas (after whom the state was named)
- Guachichiles (who were largely extinguished in the Chichimec wars and/or are current day Huicholes)
- Caxcanes (in Southern Zacatecas)

As far as trying to guess where a lineage came from solely based on a surname, I would suggest you not make any conclusions based on solely a surname. Often times surnames were "assigned" to slaves or indigenous people (e.g. lots of indigenous people around Jerez for example took the name Caldera in honor of Miguel Caldera whom they admired) and names such as de la Cruz were very commonly assigned to indigenous people by the clergy baptizing them.

Genealogy requires researching generation by generation, linking one generation to the next through concrete documentation. What are the approximate birth or marriage dates for Felicitas Navarro and Mariana de la Cruz?

PS In Iberian tradition countries, women don't change their names so there is no difference between a maiden and married name.

Joseph like you I wanted to know abt the years the family came to the states, 1916, and what they were told abt the old country.  My Dad was one of 8 and my Mother was one of 8.  I called a family meeting for each side and recorded what they had to say and was surprised how each one remembered things so differently. The memories were different because thier ages were different. I still have the recordings even though most of them are now deceased. I'm so grateful to genealogy for giving my and my decedents a chance to know where and what we came from.

Subject: [Nuestros Ranchos] Hopes and Dreams and Loved Ones: Oral History

The Importance of Oral History --- verified as much as possible by genealogical research

I want to know more I want to know about the lives of relatives, about their hopes, dreams and their loved ones. I want to know about the work they did and their lives as children and sweethearts and how they met and married their spouses.

Get your older relatives just talking about the old days and you'll be surprised how much they know, just let them go and they will give you all kinds of details.
So set aside the documents and interview your relatives.

I couldn’t agree more with Joseph. I am very lucky that my 77 year old
mother has taken an interest in family history and still remembers the
stories her grandmother told her as a child. But she hasn't stopped there,
she his been visiting her 90+ year old aunts in Mexico and (as Joseph
suggested) recorded their conversation. Those stories are the real treasure,
they have given life to the names and dates I have collected over the years.

Joseph like you I wanted to know abt the years the family came to the
states, 1916, and what they were told abt the old country. My Dad was one
of 8 and my Mother was one of 8. I called a family meeting for each side
and recorded what they had to say and was surprised how each one remembered
things so differently. The memories were different because thier ages were
different. I still have the recordings even though most of them are now
deceased. I'm so grateful to genealogy for giving my and my decedents a
chance to know where and what we came from.

Marriage Antonio Rodarte and Teresa Caldera

Marriage and baptism records clearly show that Teresa Caldera (1697-1731) was the daughter of Nicolas Caldera and Leonor Rodarte (daughter of Mateo Rodarte and Leonor de los Reyes).

Comentarios

Comentario

I looked at the marriage record for Antonio Rodarte and Theresa Caldera, his Mothers name is listed as Ysavel Davila both deceased
It also lists Theresa Si Caldera's parents as Juan Caldera deceased and Faviana Damiana as her Mother. There is a Juan Rodarte married to a Fabiana Damiana Ruiz Gutierrez who appear to be Theresa's parents. I like you have her parents listed in my records as Nicolas Caldera and Leonor Rodarte. If this is true then Nicolas and Leonor are not her parents and that would explain no dispensation. I noticed most Si are actually Sid and there are many Cid Caldera.

You also said you found a marriage information record for 1736.. I could not find it.

Comentario

Thanks for your input Linda. With respect to the 1736 Informacion Matrimonial, I double checked the link I provided and it took me straight to it, but here it is again.

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-15272-48199-8?cc=1410092&wc=…

What's also interesting is that although Teresa was legally married to Antonio (per the record we both viewed), the death record for Teresa states she is the "mujer" of Antonio Rodarte rather than the more common "casado" I see in other records for the period. The reord can be seen here: https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-15068-61637-17?cc=1410092&wc…

I also found a death record for a Juan Rodarte (widow) that appears to state his parents are Juan and Ygnacia Rodarte. I think they meant Ysabel.
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-15068-61071-1?cc=1410092&wc=…

And a record for Leonor Rodarte (doncella pobre - poor maiden?) Still trying to understand who her parents were.
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-15068-61132-89?cc=1410092&wc…

Comentario

i'm noy sure if those two are first cousins or not, but my ancestors narsisco diaz romero and his wife petra quezada were second cousins but i found no dispensations for them. so what my guess is that if that couple is realted by blood, for some reason, a dispensation was either not made, got lost through the 'sands of time' , hasn't been uploaded to familysearch. or if it is on familysearch, the documents containing that record hasn't been indexed yet by guadalajara dispensas.

Family Finder Matches

I would like to suggest that we not post lists of our FF matches via
Nuestros Ranchos but share them privately via email instead. Posting on NR
puts the lists on the internet.

In my haste to establish common ancestry with "fellow," NR members
I thought posting the names that appeared on the FF Listing on NR would save time and effort...

I was under the impression that postings to NR were limited to only NR members...apparently that is not the case based on what you noted.

How would one go about "sharing," privately via email? Not all NR members are known to one another, or whether or not they had participated in the FF testing process...

Would it be possible to set up an area on NR that is only accessible to registered NR members that could be used to post test results?

Only the email discussion lists are public (there could be a rare exception
to that if someone made a particular item open to the public). So what I
would suggest is that you go to your folder and upload a word file there
with the information you want to share. Then send an email to the group
announcing that you have uploaded new material to your folder (give the
address to your folder in your message). You should also give a few words
explaining what the new material is about. Let me know if you or anyone else
needs help doing this by emailing me at joseph@nuestrosranchos.org so we can
walk through it together.

Can this be updated easily? Maybe we could add a ftdna Family Finder
designation next to our names in the "Member Genealogies File Folders"
page, so member know to look?

Hi everyone

Is is just me or are there some recent posts missing from the recent posts list? How can it hop from today's posts to posts a year ago on one page?

Hello Rancheros... I just wanted to let you know that I have been working at resolving the missing posts issue raised by a number of members. Good news is we have not lost any posts.

I think the issue is now resolved. It appears to be the same issue that caused a similar problem a year back, the permissions to posts getting corrupted.

I have now rebuilt the permissions for all posts so please let me know if there are still posts you expect to see that are not visible.

Jose Maria Ulloa????

I'm having so much trouble with this ancestor Jose Maria Ulloa. This individual was from la Estancia De Los Delgadillos his wife in which i descend from is Felipa Ruiz.I cannot at all find nothing on t

Alba family

I'm trying to find more information about the family of my great
grandfather. His name was Teodoro Alba.

Teodoro Alva Terrones doesn't line up with your great grandfather saying
that his mother's surname was González. What does line up is that the
mother of Teodoro Alva Terrones has relatives whose baptisms show them to
be indios. There weren't any Mayas in Jalisco but your great grandfather
likely meant Mexican Indians.

Teodoro Alva Terrones was the great grandson of Juan José de Alba and
Antonia Gertrudis de Esparza y Fuentes. Juan José de Alba was an hijo
natural of Clara de Alba. Therefore the paternal surname of Juan José de
Alba is not known.

Jose Teodoro Alba Alba baptized 2 Apr 1854 doesn't line up with any of the
maternal surnames being González nor does it line up with the mother being
Indian nor does it line up with the age of your great grandfather. All four
of the grandparents of Jose Teodoro Alba were documented as españoles
meaning Jose Teodoro Alba Alba they didn't have recent ancestors that were
indios.

No matter what, if you don't have the first and last name of both of the
parents of your great grandfather there is no way to know for sure who his
parents were. There are many baptisms that are missing from the records.
You could ask a relative that descends through the paternal line to get a
37 marker Y-DNA test. The two of you could also get a Family Finder test.
However, there are no guarantees that you would find anything definitive.
For those tests to work to your advantage other people with documented
trees would have had to have taken the tests. However, it does seem to be
one of the few options that you have left to try.

I found that research changed my family stories too. My Castanon Grandfather said they were French and originally from Germany.. not true but then again the DNA was R1 b1 and only goes to mid 1700's.
My maternal Grandmother said her Father was a Spanish sailor who jumped ship from Spain and I have found nothing to confirm that in Tamazula, Jalisco either.
I do miss the stories.. they were more exciting than what research has proven but then again a complete new story emerges..

I too miss the "stories," now that my parents are deceased. It wasn't until I was an adult that I realized it was the "stories," that "tugged," at my "heart strings," that lead me on the path of family history research...

My husband's YDNA of haplogroup Q1a3a and his mtDNA of "A" fall into the Native American Grouping.

On his FF Population Finder he has the following projected results...
Continent (Subcontinent)(1) Native American (Central American) Population Maya Percentage 51.98% (2) East Asia (Siberian) - Yakut - 5.80% (3) Europe (Western European) - French, Orcadian, Spanish - 30.40% and (4) Middle East (North African) -Mozabite - 11.82%...

Can only of us say that the "stories," of having French and Spanish ancestry are not true...All very interesting!

FamilyTreeDNA Family Finder

I never thought Family Finder was going to be able to go back 10
generations or so.

Armando,

How many "suggested relationship," names appeared on your FamilyFinder (autosomal) print out?

If you did not contact everyone on your FF listing, what method did you use in deciding who to contact first?

You noted that FTDNA went back 10 generations, are you saying that the common ancestor that you shared with the three individuals that you mentioned wasn't established until that 10th generation linking?

If so, that was a remarkable find for all of you...most researchers are lucky to have traced their ancestry back 5 generations.

I'm now thinking that this FF autosomal testing is only helpful in establishing relationship for individuals that have a paper trail of at least 5 generations or that have known family members tested.

A couple of the 38 individuals that appeared on my husband's FF autosomal listing have no idea nor have done research because of just not knowing where their ancestors actually came from...it's for this reason that I think that the FF autosomal test in many cases leads to frustration and false hope of locating a much need clue to their ancestors.

I'm opened to suggestions and comments on how to change my current thinking about FamilyFinder autosomal testing...

Is it a fair conclusion to say that a suggested area of origin/region and or population % are solely based on ones DNA comparison to the testing lab's database for all individuals tested by a given lab?

Thank you,
Pat Silva Corbera

Subject: [Nuestros Ranchos] FamilyTreeDNA Family Finder

I never thought Family Finder was going to be able to go back 10
generations or so. I have found three different people through Family
Finder with whom I share a different ancestor about 10 generations back.
WIth one person I share ancestors on the Macias Valadez and Martín del
Campo lines. With another person I share ancestors on the
Cervantes-Villaseñor and Macias Valadez lines. With the third person we
share Diego de Burgos Villaseñor y Tovar as an ancestor. There are a couple
more that if I had their great-grandparents info I would most likely be
able to find our common ancestor. If enough people did this then we could
triangulate and figure out which markers are for which ancestor and at the
same time some missing branches could be found for some people. I recommend
everyone, even siblings, parents, and aunts/uncles to take this test and to
look closely at their matches no matter how distant the match seems to be.

lineas.

Armando, I think family finder go back more than 10 generations, for example in my case I am 5% Siberian (tribe Yakut) my mtDNA is haplogroup A and that sound that the native americans of my mother side came from that part thousands of years ago. I do not have any relative in the last 10 generations of Siberia.

Saludos.

Juan Francisco,

I just noticed your response from Sunday.

There is a difference between ancestral composition and finding relatives through Family Finder. I wasn't speaking of ancestral composition (Population Finder Percentage) which is what your post is about. You and I are posting about two different things that are found within Family Finder. On the Family Finder page you can see that both things are mentioned http://www.familytreedna.com/landing/family-finder.aspx

My post was about the fact that even though Family Finder announces that it can "Match with five generations of family" in reality it can match with relatives as far back as 10 generations. This is what I was pointing out, since it is not something posted about most places and it isn't mentioned by FamilyTreeDNA.

I was already aware that Population Finder Percentage goes back tens of thousands of years. I was also aware that Native Americans come from Siberia and therefore they have some ancestry from Siberia and that this shows up on the Population Finder Percentage. I am also 14% Native American with 0.88% being from Siberia. However, that is not what my original post was about, especially since this is something most people know about.

It seems the assumption was made that since Population Finder Percentage can go back tens of thousands of years that relatives from more than 10 generations ago can be found. That is not the case. They use centiMorgans (cM) of greater than 7 in order to find relatives. Since the units of cM go down dramatically past 5 generations it is harder and harder to find relatives the further back in time you go. However, it is possible up to 10 generations to find other people with at least 7 cM in common.

I hope that clears up the confusion between Population Finder Percentage and finding relatives in Family Finder.

In the Y-Haplogroup R SRY2627+ and L176.2+ Project everyone one that has

Z198 and L176.2 are descendants of DF27 which is a descendant of P312 which

If more members of NR did Deep Clade testing we would be able to find more

I had read that R-P310 was the parent code to P312.  It's great that research is constantly progressing.  It's unfortunate that so few of our family members think this a worthwhile endeavor.  Would my brother have to retest for any of the advanced tests, or do they use the original sample?  The only thing that really keeps me from immediately further testing or joining projects are the costs I would incur.  Keep me posted.   Thanks for the info.    Alice
PS:  On that map we we viewing, I was also SO pleased that Santander, Spain was highlighted.  My Santelices line came directly from Santander to Mexico.

FamilyTreeDNA should be able to use the existing sample that they have from
Geno 2.0. It is the same lab that does the testing for both. Now that I
found the confirmation that Z198 and L176.2 are the same you don't
necessarily need advanced testing for Y-DNA. If you plan on joining the
SRY2627+ and L176.2+ Project a 37 marker Y-DNA test would probably be best
before joining.

A relative of yours that has the Santelice surname through the paternal
line would have to get Y-DNA tests in order for you to know if they are
also R1b and which subclade if so. Not everyone from Santander, and
surrounding areas, is from the same subclade or even the same haplogroup.

Armando

Hi Alice,

Go to this website and type in your brother's results:

http://www.hprg.com/hapest5/hapest5b/hapest5.htm

It will only give you the base of his halpogroup.

I'm almost certain FTD DNA has an R1b group, I'm not sure about Nat Geo
Geno 2, but it's worth investigating. I joined my halpogroup group via
FTDNA and this group sent me my complete halpo group designation. If you
can join the R1b group via FTDNA I would do that as I'm sure it would have
more resources.

Juan,

That website only helps a person learn what major haplogroup they belong
to. In Alice's case she already knows her brother belongs to major
haplogroup R1b since R1b11a2a1a is a subclade of R1b. The R-Z918 is a new
SNP and it's location on the tree is still under investigation -
http://www.isogg.org/tree/ISOGG_YDNA_SNP_Index.html

You can see all of the R1b subclades at the ISOGG (International Society of
Genetic Genealogy) tree http://www.isogg.org/tree/ISOGG_HapgrpR.html

You can also see some of them at
http://www.eupedia.com/europe/Haplogroup_R1b_Y-DNA.shtml#R1b-subclades

You can find out what your subclade is by getting a Deep Clade test with
FamilyTreeDNA.
