This series was one of the best and most interesting I have ever seen. Would that it would happen to us Mexican Americans. Marge:)

Joseph,
The show is called African American Lives and it will be shown again on
February 12 at 1:00 am PST. Most of their programs are available on video from their PBS.org store. Our local PBS channel 9 in my area has a store in Seattle. Emilie

Joseph,
I think I had asked them to e-mail me the records since I couldn't navigate
well enough to find them on my own, and they would only fax them or mail them. Emilie

This didn't go through the first time....I am resending it....
Hi Linda,
I also watched that show. I found it was much easier to understand
and follow than what is currently "out there". Relating to the show's discussion on Angola, it said that one out of every 4 African Americans were believed to be from that area. For those of you that didn't get to watch the show, here is a clip of it: I might have mentioned that I have done some research on the African
Diaspora, in particular throughout Latin America. While I wished I could have done much more research, and I am by no means an expert, I can share this: Spain was very much involved in the slave trade as were the British, Dutch, and Portuguese and to a lessor extent the French. Even though Spain and England agreed to stop the slave trading NORTH OF THE
EQUATOR in the early 1800's, they continued exporting slaves south of equator for decades later. So, there were waves of |

there is a DNA testing that they say can tell you what part of Africa The public service chanel here in Everett, Chanel 9 has a show on the genealogy search for Blacks to find thier genetic makeup. Since I have traced 3 Mulato lines in 3 different states, Jalisco, Zacatecas and Michoacan I was very interested in what they had to say. They shared the fact that the Portuguese controlled the slave trade and that in the time frame I'm looking at, mid 1600's the odds are the slaves were from Angola. They shared the major advancments they are making daily in genetic testing now being able to |

Linda,
I saw that show the other evening, too. My husband watched too, and
he was amazed. It was especially interesting to me, since I am discovering just how many mulato lines I have on my father's side from Zacatecas. It should be interesting to whites too to find out that they may have as much as 11% African blood as that genetecist found out (and his mother told him to stop talking about it-he looked nothing but white), and that someone like the professor that narrated the show had 50% white blood even though anyone looking at him would say he was black. When Oprah saw the documents for her black slave ancestors and she cried, I cried too. It was interesting too that blacks had Asian blood too. My father's Spanish ancestors, the Olagues and Tinajeros (Felix/Suriano)
were all mulatos by the mid and late 1700's. I really want to send for those DNA kits now,

I find this all very exciting and hope if you get the chance that you will get to watch this very informative show. Even if you have no black ancestors the sharing of genetic information and genealogy research methods is great and well worth watching. Linda in Everett

Joseph,Below is a copy of what I found today on one of my ancestors in
Ancestry.com. The original entry in Ancestry.com that I printed out back in August 2004 said "Extracted from documents in the Archivo General de Indias in Seville, copies of which are among the holdings of the Family History Library in Salt Lake City". Now I notice that this entry has that sentence truncated after "copies of". I wonder why they did that? Did they not want the public to know that the FHC has those records, or did the FHC make them eliminate that part? They only give some book as a resource. That time that I tried to navigate the AER online, I got as far as getting
a password and I pulled up any old record, and it was amazing! The actual photo of the document from the 1500s appeared on the screen and it had all kinds of info, but the destination was also "Nuevo Espana" (like in the one below) not any particular state in Mexico because there probably weren't any states yet. |

not sure, i don't think so.

Joseph,
Are these the same archives that are in Ancestry.com? I found one of
my ancestors on their Immigration Section for 1550 on that website (you must be a subscriber). I tried the instructions for the AER and couldn't follow them. Soy muy mensa (technically challenged). Emilie Garcia

How does one sign up if one doesn't speak Spanish? Just walk me
through the words so I can sign up. In case you're wondering how I
can research in the Spanish language when I can't read it, I search
using my family names. When I get a hit, I make a copy and translate
it later. Simple, time consuming, and not very accurate. But it is
all I can do.
Linda
Sorry about that Deena. I hate it when people throw acronyms at me and now you have caught me doing just that. AER is Archivos Españoles en Red Anyone can sign up for an account and they are in the process of digitizing (scanning) all of their collection and for those documents that have already been digitized, you can simply pull them up and view them online through the AER website: http://aer.mcu.es/sgae/index_aer.jsp I think the Sombrerete Padron that Joseph mentions is the following. If so it is not yet digitized, but you can probably order a hard copy.
I am very interested in knowing more about the "unfilmed" records of
Sombrerete. You say the information should be available shortly via AER. I
am not familiar with this term.

Those should become available digitally any time now via AER. If not, you can order copies of the documents or films from them. I have done so already and they are very efficient,
if expensive.
Joseph: Though Colotlan is in the State of Jalisco for governmental purposes, its parrish is part of the Diocese of Zacatecas and geographically it is basically part of Zacatecas as there is no way in or out of the town without going through Zacatecas.
