Odd names WAS

That's what I thought, too, Em! BTW, my middle name is Alicia...my folks said it was after a family friend but I don't remember ever meeting her. My first name is after my Scots mother's sister but in Spanish. I've since discovered that my aunt was named after her grandmother, who was named after her own grandmother. Had I known that I would have named one of my own daughters a variant of it. Marge, who is Shinju in Japanese.:)

Marge, most of the names you mention sound like they came from the classic
Greek or Roman---pagan?

Marge,

My dad was named Restituto and he went to court to legally change his
name to Jose. Many people called him ''Tuto'' for short but he hated it.

And yes I am glad my mom named me Alicia and not Juana because Juana was my saint day and that's the name the priest told my mother she should name me. He told her Alicia was a pagan name and it had to be a saint's name. Three cheers for mom who stuck to her guns.

Catching up on messages

I'm baaack
We finally got our internet connection back - have been w/o internet
since Oct 29, and had been checking email @library a few days each
week, but really had very little time to read many of the digests as I
could only use library computer for about 30 min (not near enough time
to read the Ranchos messages). I have spent the past 1-1/2 hrs reading
past messages and have read up to Digest #678/Nov 29. It has been
wonderful and interesting; can't wait to read more - but will have to
wait until tomorrow (it is past my bedtime ;) ). Thank you all for your
contributions of knowledge & experiences. Y'all take care.
Merry Christmas blessings to you all.

These people were known as "manitos" (the priests had told them they were Hermanitos), and their nasally speech was unique, an ancient 16th century Spanish, where they dropped the first and last parts of words as in 'equia for acequia, and 'manito for hermanito, and colorao for colorado, and they had beliefs and practices unique to them.  Due to more mobility nowadays, that is all gone.

Linda,

When was it that your father visited Durazno and was asked if some people
in California had black skins?  You said 1836, but did you mean 1936 or
1986?

That reminds me of what I once witnessed somewhere in Mexico or Jalisco or
Zacatecas a long time ago, around the 1960's, I guess (the last time I was in
Mexico was 1968).  An African-American tourist and his family (wife, two
kids) were walking down a street, he with a camera slung around his neck,
wearing shorts and sneakers, all gawking at everything.  Unbeknownst to
him, he and his family were being gawked at too.  A small girl
near me, a mestiza or Indian looking child, said to another child, "MI-ra los
NeGRItos!" (in a sing-song type of voice that I guess denotes pity or the
like).  I couldn't believe that a small child would refer to a huge grown
man in the diminutive 'negrito", but they also do that when referring to Asians
- "chinitos"  -- whether they are Chinese or Japanese.  They truly
don't know

premature on my part......sorry!   So far I am already committed to
about 3 or 4 other trips, one being a rather long one of about 2 or 3 months
from the end of March until about June, 2006.  I do plan to go to Zacatecas
sometime but right now I just don't know exactly when.  Thanks
anyway!

if the tour is for that time frame, I'm
