Guanabal

Hi Mickey,

There's a small river in Guachinango, Jalisco by that name:

There's also another river in Coahuila:

Good Luck with Rita

Emilie,

Thanks for your concern. I do live in Mexico's east coast near the
Texas border but about 100 miles inland from the Gulf. Although we're
not in Rita's direct path we're watching closely where it is going. I
too have some relatives in Houston who have had to evacuate to safer
places. Hopefully there won't be any loss of human lives this time.

Saludos!

Victor,

Don't you live in Mexico on or very near the Gulf of Mexico on the Texas
border?  Will you have to evacuate?  Hope you and your vast library
are out of harm's way.  I have a cousin in League City (between Galveston

Questions for George Ryskamp

Joseph,

I think your question on scholarly research is excellent! I would
love to see a simple directory with that type of information.
By the way, along these lines, I have an acquaintance (via Internet
only) in Jaliso who is both a genealogist and is involved in
scholarly research. He is a historian in Encarnacion de Diaz,
Jalisco, and is very knowledgeable on area history in general.
I haven't written to him in AGES (perhaps he's not very happy
with me for not writing!) You may have already spoken with him,
but just in case, I'll forward his contact information.

His name is Rodolfo Humberto Hernandez and he can be found at:
  rodolfohdzch@... .

I would venture to say Mr. Ryskamp would comment that notarial
records are some of the most valuable yet underused resources.
I went to a workshop he presented once and he was quite convincing
about their merit. Unfortunately, I, myself, have never used
them. But I've seen many and I know that they are a wealth of
information - the

Questions for George Ryskamp

I'm going to DC on the 24 for the Hispanic Family History Symposium.
I'm going to record Mr. Ryskamp and at least one other Archivist for my
Podcast project (http://NuestrosRanchos.net). Its possible that I might
interview him that day. . .thanks to Mickey Garcia who asked him if he
would let me interview him (thanks Mickey).

Can you all think of any other questions. . .so far here are my
questions with 3 of yours:

Members of the Ranchos group were interested in these first three
questions:

Are there any school or other institution projects to motivate children to get interested in family
history and research?

Are there are any kind of statistics or failure/success rates for
genealogy researchers in terms of a generation count? In other words,
what can the average genealogist realistically expect to find from
available sources?

Are you taking on new clients and what are your rates?

My questions:

When using FHC's for research the temptation is to stay with baptism, birth

Long Term Data Storage

What does the following have to do with Latino and Native American
Genealogy and History? Well everything. It is the goal of this project
to archive and store various audio files of information on this topic
for the long term. I for one have wondered about this very subject
several times and am glad NARA is taking the bull by the horns to the
tune of $308 million. Let's hope for a solution we can realistically
use.

following the article is a link to an interview of Alex Kosiorek by
Doug Kaye of IT Conversations on the subject of how best to burn CD's
for long term information storage. Very interesting and even though it
is one year old I think the info is still applicable today.
