Surnames

Ranchos,

Soon after the Spanish Conquest of Mexico and thereafter during Colonial times, the ruling Españoles did not permit the Native Indians from possessing surnames unless the Indios were of a special allied family, the Indios somehow had earned themselves a surname, or eventually the adopted a surname out of names that were not necessarily surnames.

Reyes is one such last name.  Every year on January 6, the Catholic Church celebrates the Feast Day of the Epiphany, or Feast of the Magi, when the three wise king visited the Baby Jesus in Bethlehem.  In Mexico and Spain the day is called Epifanía or “Día de los Reyes Magos.”  The “Reyes” were called Melchor, Gaspar, and Baltazar.  So as a result of this holy day, many children born on or near the holy-day were named one or a combination of the following:  José Epifánio, María Epifánia, José de los Reyes, María de los Reyes, Melchor, Melchora, Gaspar, or Baltazar.

This is essentially what happened to children born on other

Rey, Reyes, etc

I went to this page:

and plugged Rey in and found that according to this Heraldry Dictionary
the names were different. Of coure that doesn't mean that one name
didn't evolve into the other or a lot of other possibilities:

Index to the Enciclopedia Heráldica Hispano-Americana of
Alberto and Arturo García Carraffa

The 88 volumes of this work, [Library of Congress Call Number:
CR2142.G3] supplemented by a continuing work, offer an immense tribute
to the work of indefatigable genealogists. The work treats Spanish
heraldry in the first two volumes, and with volume three begins the Diccionario
Heráldico y Genealógico de Apellidos Españoles y Americanos
, or
a listing of over 15,000 names with their respective genealogical
histories (with color illustrations of representative crests) of
Spanish and Spanish-American families. Please note that on the spine
one finds two

Rey/Reyes Name

I have on more than one occasion heard that people with the Rey or
Reyes last name belong to one and the same family. How can this be
possible?? Has anyone heard similar comments or can anyone
elaborate. Is it a root name of another name, where does it
orginate, does it come from another country??? In my family I have
RuizRey, Flores-Rey, Rey, these families are from the Camargo
Chihuahua area. Yet, my daughter married a Tomas Rey in El Paso, Tx.

Are they related or what?

Digest Number 329

Hi Joseph
I joined the Family Dna, Is this the same. I was a little disappointed with them, I paid around $200. 00 total for me and my brother, he is no longer with us as of this year.

What would be different with this DNA to the Family DNA

okay, i just know that some of you are itching (pues rasca) to know
about your Mexican DNA. And i just know you wish this group provided you
with a lot more high quality messages for you to increase your learning
on this subject. . .well never fear the Mexico DNA forum is alive and in
operation thanks to Gary Felix. why not have a look and get all your
questions asked and wait for some good answers. . . .well those answers
won't be coming from me because I'm still in the asking mode.

New Files Added for Los Altos de Jalisco

Hey everyone,
Hope you all are having a good weekend. I made time today to add
some files to my new Jalisco folder, more specifically
Jalostotitlan, San Miguel El Alto, and San Juan de los Lagos. The
most common names in these files are Gonzalez, Martin, & Padilla.

I'm not all that far into the history of my familia in Jalisco. But
I'll be making a lot of additions in the next four months. I'm
fortunate to be able to go to Salt Lake City and the Family History
Library there, and will make a lot of additions to these files in
early December and early February.

Check it out.

Take care,
Roberto

Hello,

I'm glad you are interested in joining the Ranchos group: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ranchos/.
We are a
small but dedicated group of serious researchers. Here is the
description of the group from our home page:

"This group is for those
actively searching for their Mexican Genealogy Roots. El objetivo de
este

Roberto Martinez de Los Altos

que te dije!

I told you that you and Steven would probably hook up. I'm glad you
have caught his interest as now you and those other cousins he
mentioned will have plenty to talk about. If possible it
would be way cool if you could keep the "non personal" discussions on-list
but you guys have to decide that one. Its just good to see some of
my effort paying off in discussion among the members. Anyway if you
keep it on-list very fine and if you go off-list esta bien tambien.

Be ready for the rush of material and in your research if you find that
you expand to other geographical areas of Jalisco, Zacatecas, and/or
Aguascalientes please share this info as well as others might care to
join your primos network.

oh by the way tambien soy Padilla but my Padillas are from the Juarez,
Chihuahua area and maybe came from Los Altos but I don't have any proof
of that.

oh another thing that would be so very cool would be this DNA thing you
mentioned. It would be great if you get sold
on
