I guess you're right, we did eat well at the expense of hotel rooms & baths! We only ate out in Mexico because it was cheaper to feed a family of eight with big appetites. :) Occasional burgers in the U.S. happened more rarely. During our trips, we would pile into a hotel room the night before arriving to our first destination: Ags (my dad's family immigrated there from Jal.in the 1950's) for showers. I visited the same cemetery when I visited Jerez a number of years ago. I took photographs of the headstones (those that I thought that were related to me). The church and cemetery were probably very beautiful in their time, but yes, the site has been neglected. You're right Alberto. I recall when I lived in San Diego, a Mexican-Amer co-worker telling me that another made tamales funny. I responded with how does she make them? He answered that she folded them instead of tying the ends with a small strip of hoja. I smiled because we fold them, and I kept wondering why they tied the ends in all of the Mexican restaurants in San Diego. This is when I discovered that this was how they made them in Baja California where my first co-worker's mom was from, and many of the restaurant cooks in the area. It's not a very big town but it is a lovely one! I did get to go to a cemetery called El Panteon de Dolores (there was more to the name, but I cannot recall it.) It was very interesting. Some of graves are covered by elaborate headstones and huge carved marblery. A few are very distant relatives or family connections of my grandmother's. What was also sad about this site was that here these folks had spent a LOT of money to perpetuate their existence and the cemetery was so neglected and overgrown with weeds. St. Xavier is near the Alameda and Piasano streets that are just west of Washington Park. Most of the old homes have been torn down (probably because the area was becoming a slum area). Nearby, there is a 6 lane bridge crossing over to Juarez. From the bridge you can see St. Xavier. Most of people that lived in the St. Xavier church area were originally from Chihuahua, such as my mother's family, and many were from Zacatecas/Durango, such as my father's family. The great majority of the people were very poor, but their sons and daughters eventually made the core of our great generation--hard working, outstanding citizens. Many of the second generation want on to become doctors, lawyers, engineers, actors (Antony Quinn, Gilbert Roland), teachers, politicians, war heros, and athletics (Ted Williams mother was from there). By the way, my husband is from the municipality area of Tangancicuaro - what surprised me about this beautiful area is how "green" everything was - it is very fertile ground, in this rolling foot hills area. My uncle Jesus Duarte still lives in the old barrio and he probably knew some of your relatives. As far as finding your Macias family in Zacatecas, you can find them if you have a plan. I found many of my Duarte ancestors by tracing them them from Mapimi, Durango, to Jerez, Zacatecas, and eventually, to other parts of Zacatecas. In fact, I believe my greatggggfather was probably the patriarch of the Duarte clan in Zacatecas! Use the Mormon library to gather your genealogical information. Get a microfiche copy of all the Macias in Zacatecas and start researching them one by one, starting with those with the same first and last name of your grandfather's. Emile, things were so rough for Mexicans in Hollywood in the 20's thru the 50's, that Mexicans were not given jobs on the sets, but they were not even allowed on the grounds!
