I can recognize a word or a name here and there, but that kind of handwriting is really hard to read. Even If I knew where the name of the ship is in the document, I think it would be hard to me to read or to recognize as a word.

I Marqués de Guadaupe Gallardo

Mena Family - Research on Illegitimate Child

Hello, everyone. I'm researching the Mena family. Our family comes from Lagos de Moreno, Jalisco.

Comentarios

Comentario

His siblings are all half siblings from a different father, so their records were not helpful for his father's line. He married in the United States, and the record does not list his parents. He later had a church wedding in a Catholic church, and I'm hoping they will have more details.

I haven't been able to find a baptismal record yet - The oral history in our family is that he couldn't be baptized because he was illegitimate. I don't know if that is true though.
I'm ordering his alien registration file from the National Archives, so hopefully I'll find some kinds of clue there.

Comentario

Indeed it can be very difficult to find the ancestors of an illegitimate child. If there are any male descendants of José Jesús Mena through a direct paternal line, I would recommend taking a Y-DNA test for him and posting the results at online databases. You may get a match from another branch of the family if they were also curious enough to take the same test.
Good luck with your search,
Victoriano Navarro

Comentario

There have been many occasions where I have discovered the father of a illegitimate child. It sometimes takes a lot of work and luck. Sometimes the illegitimate offspring marry into the legitimate family and the truth comes out in marriage records, "informacion matrimonial", marriage dispensations. Sometimes I find the information in a baptismal record of a child where the illegitimate father uses his fathers last name when he baptized his child and sometimes gives the paternal grandfathers name. Sometimes I have found the information by following the descendancy of siblings. When following the descendancy of siblings you have to check their marriage records and baptismal records for clues. Sometimes a land dispute over inheritance will bring out information. Sometimes the illegitimate child will claim to be legitimate in some of their adult records and give the name of their biological father.

Though I have been successful at discovering the father on numerous occasions, I have also been unsuccessful at times. Sometimes my successes have come only after a lot of work and many years. Recently I found the legitimate father only after studying someone elses family tree because something seemed familiar to me. It turns out that I was unsuccessful in finding the records that I sought I my research but a sibling married many times and in one of his marriages a descendant worked on the family tree and he had information where the illegitimate son claimed to be legitimate and gave his fathers identity. In this case I was able to identify only because in my research I had identified the fathers surname even though I had been unsuccessful in identifying the father through my records.

There is no mention of the Parents, they seems to be local but their information for the marriages was taken on this places which I am not sure if I am reading them right "Boei" and "Siego" may be you are more familiar with them.

Question about Researching in a Parish

Hello all,

Have any of you ever done research in the actual Parish in Mexico?

I am asking, because in about 3 weeks, I will be going to Mexico. And
if possible I will try find some information at the parish and
cemetary level.

So could anyone give me some pointers, on what to expect? Or the best
way to approach the subject?

Thanks,

Jonathan,   I have only gone to two places in Mexico, to Nochistlan Zac and Tlachichila Zac but did not have any luck in getting access to the actual records. Having said that it was at the beginning of my geneaological journey and in Tlachichila I think and hope that if I come prepared with documentation showing that I am doing verifiable research, I believe I might be allowed access. My cousins still live there and are well connected in the church. Hope as they say is everlasting so I will not lose hope.   I would advise you to be well prepared to present your credentials as a researcher and possibly be willing to pay a small fee or make a small donation to the church, nothing lost in trying. Many times church offices are closed because they have limited financial resources and cannot hire a full time secretary or receptionist. You might find the name of your town on-line, check for a contact name and number and
see if you can call ahead to schedule an appointment.   What towns will you ge going to? Sometimes it is easier in the smaller towns than in the larger ones. Good Luch Jonathan...........Alicia

Jonathan, my "cemetary" experience in El Durazno was that someone in
each town has a key to the local cemetary, I did not find any that
were open, they were locked. At the older cemetary in Los Haros,
district of Jerez we were lucky that someone was working there and
agreed to let us in, we had to leave when they did. Cemetaries were
not taken care of but the marble monuments were huge and paid for by
relatives from the states who sent money I was told. When we were in
Guadalajara the same was true for the really old cemetaries, someone
had to admit us.
I had no luck finding records in Jerez Zacatecas, El Limon and
Tamazula Jalisco. Clerks were overworked and without copy machines or
time to give us. I had better luck with the records at the FHC.
The trip was still very much worth the time and money, wonderful
people just researching records is not a priorty for them. I asked to
check a marriage ledger from 1920 and was told the public is not
allowed to touch the books.
Good luck in your search, I'm sure the locals will fill you in when
you get there as how to go about getting co-operation each place you
go.

Are you going to Sonora?  I was trying to remember where your wife's people were from...cannot remember.

Also received your cd's and the pic....now you see why I do not like to take pictures!!!   Thank you very much for the CD's.

Jonathan, I spent 3 days in Ciudad Guzman/Zapotlan El Grande but
didn't know at the time that my ancestors had lived there so didn't
look at it through those eyes. There are 2 church's in the square.
A very large one and to the side a small one. If your searching for
specific records double check which of the two church's have them.
The people were very friendly and there are a great variety of
hotels and motels with a very old one right in the plaza area. It's
a hub for everything in that part of Jalisco. My destination was
Tamazula and Zapotiltic but the accomodations there were terrible so
we returned each night to our motel in Ciudad Gusman, I believe the
rooms ran about $40. American for a room for 3 people and were very
nice. Lot's of good place's to eat and even a natural yogurt and
health food store that was wonderul.
Good luck on your trip, Linda in Everett

I can not locate this town on any map. Was it integrated into Colotlan?

According to the Instituto de Información Estadística y Geográfica it is located in Totatiche. See the Totatiche part of this map - http://iieg.gob.mx/contenido/GeografiaMedioAmbiente/Colotlan_MBase2013…

The Secretaría de Desarrollo Social doesn't have a population for Cuisco http://www.microrregiones.gob.mx/catloc/LocdeMun.aspx?tipo=clave&campo=…

It had a population of 28 in the 1930 Census

TORIBIO HERNANDEZ DE ARELLANO

Hello Everyone!

Daniel,

I think that would be a great idea to get a copy of those documents and
address the topic with Mariano Gonzalez Leal. I think it's about time we
solve this mystery. Or at least rule out certain families as the parents of
Toribio.

Hola Page and Daniel,

It's the sites like you mention geni and the others that really confused me
going back to the 1300s with ancestors of Toribio Hernandez de Arellano.
When I started I wasn't aware that they had false information and thought
it must be known information and I was convinced I descended from Cortés
and many others. I still think that if you use apellidos like Hurtado de
Mendoza or Ramirez de Arellano that their must be a connection to those
ruling houses and would just like to know which line is correct.

Unfortunately, we have not come up with the document that states who. Toribios father and mother are. Though most of my research indicates that he does belong to this Fernandez de Hijar and Ramirez de Arellano family. There is another Ramirez de Arellano family that converted to Catholicism and was originally Jewish. My research has led to the conclusion that Toribio did not belong to the Converso Ramirez de Arellano and did belong to the Ramirez de Arellano de Santillana family. Much discussion of the information that we do have has led to the hypothesis that he was a grandson of Juan Fernandez de Hijar and not his son. This hypothesis has Toribio as possibly being born in the "new world". This hypothesis includes the idea that he was baptized with the first name of an ancestor but went by Toribio.

We are left to hypothesize until we find a primary source that directly links him to his parents.

Mia,

I don't know anything about this topic, but I did have a question. I notice
that in several places on the forum, Toribio Hernandez de Arellano's birth
is said to be 1530; my question is, is that date known or is it just a
guess? Because I looked up Juan Fernandez de Hijar and he died June
29th, 1509, which would be 21 years before Toribio Hernandez de Arellano
was born if 1530 is right.

Comentario

Paige,

Toribio's estimated birth year was set at 1530 due to the various notorial, wills, birth records, etc that are found in Santa Maria de los Lagos and La Sagrada Mitra de Guadalajara. I personally do not have these, but Mariano Gonzalez Leal has them several copies of them. I can ask if I can get a copy or bring up the subject to his attention if you would like. Please, remember until there is an actual document that states the day, month and year it is not scripture. Priest committed errors, even some people it appears did not know what year they were born, etc. Even if the record says, he was (i.e. 30) it does not satisfy me until I have a primary source. Many people have been trying to connect our ancestors to the royal houses of Europe. Many of has have succeeded, but in the case of Toribio and Isabel Hurtado de Mendoza. We need documents. We can't simply say, I think. We need to get into a habit of using documents. I have found many websites with his parents as Juan Fernan
dez de Hijar, el conde de Belchite. My question is what document do they have to prove it? None. Good eye on the his death date, this rules it out.

I am restless of finding people constantly plagiarizing, assuming, and posting on these "so-called" genealogical websites. I have been a victim of such behavior. I spend hours, studying, analyzing, ordering documents from Spain, and then I share it and people pass it off as their own work. And then it gets leaked and it appears on these websites, Genenet, Genie, Ancestry, etc. Never sourced. I choose to publish my work now before I release it.

Hello all,

I was curious what new information is available regarding the ancestry
of Toribio Hernandez de Arellano, the spouse of Isabel Hurtado de Mendoza.
I reviewed many older Nuestros Ranchos forums regarding Toribio and most
say that he's the son of Count Juan Fernandez de Hijar and Isabel de
Arellano. Does anyone know if that's true?

Mia

Comentario

Mia,

There is no direct evidence that they are his parents. I believe when it was discussed originally in the forum, it was a mere hypothesis. Though there exists some evidence that may point that direction, but we cannot simply "assume" that's how it is. I am amazed after doing a quick google search the many hits I got. Do these people simply copy, paste and pass information without citations? Where are the documents? Have they studied them page by page? Where did they obtain? What evidence exists that names his parents? This is not genealogy, I get restless of people doing such things.

DMdTC

Comentario

Mia ,

I agree with Daniel. We have not come up with direct evidence for his parents. We have only come up with information that leads us to believe who his parents are but lack confirmation. Without confirmation it is just a hypothesis based on the information we have at hand. Yet it is not just a shot in the dark. It is not just a guess. The hypothesis is an educated guess based on the evidence that we do possess.
I do list his parents in my family tree but the lack of confirmation has me placein parenthesis "check notes" as to why they are his probable parents. In my notes The parents that I list are based on circumstantial evidence only and he does descend from the Hernandez de Hijar and Ramirez de Arellano family
I used to believe that it is possible that Toribio is not the name given to him at birth. If Toribio was a nickname that later stuck, then his baptismal name should have been used for the marriage sacrament according to canon law. Documents other than marriage would refer to him as Toribio. I have stated this hypothesis before on previous post. As I now believe Toribio to be a descendant, and not a son of Juan Fernandez de Hijar, I believe that we would find his documents as Toribio Sanchis Fernandez. If he is Toribio Sanchis Fernandez then he was born in Valencia, Spain.

I have looked through my records and confirmed that Diego Ramires and Ines Brenes are not the parents of Toribio Hernandez Ramirez.
Diego's son Gonzalo married Toribio's grandaughter.
It appears Diego and Toribio are related and a marriage dispensation would confirm this.
I still believe that Juan Hernandez de Hijar and Isabel Ramirez de Arellano are Toribio's parents. All evidence that I have points in this direction.

Diego Ramirez and Ines Brenes' descendants would have created the Ramirez

with Juan Hernandez de Hijar and Isabel Ramirez de Arellano we just need that solid

document. There has to be some sort of document somewhere people dont just pop out

I believe that because we have not found this document in mexico that there is a high probability that they were married in spain and that is where we would find a dispensation due to their blood relationship.

I had the parents for Toribio Hernandez de Arellano 1530(spouse: Isabel Hurtado de Mendoza) as Juan Hernandez de Hijar and Isabel Ramirez de Arellano but as I recheck all my info trying to put it together I find that he is also listed with Diego Ramirez and Ines de Brienes as his parents. Which is correct?

trying to understand the "Tronco" in a marriage record

example: Tronco
Nicolas Lozano
Jose santos Lozano 1. Timotea Lozano
Proquinta Lozano 2. Telisfora Reinaga

Comentarios

Comentario

Thats pretty much all about those "troncos", in this case starts with Nicolas Lozano, then the first generation (primer grado de consanguinidad) are brother and sister; Jose santos and Timotea, their kids, first cousins are Proquinta and Telisfora, their kids, second cousins are Ma. Trinidad and Lorenzo, and the last ones, third cousins, Jose G. and Maria, which in this case they must be the Groom and Bride.

The advantage of this information is that it can take you back a couple of generations even with people who have different last names, like in this case. Also even if the name of the spouses are not given we can a least know their possible last name with their kids, thus Timotea Lozano must have married someone with the Reinaga surname, and so on. Those are a least some extra clues.

yes I been told that sometime before jalpa. Nochistlan was were most came from I havent looked in Nochistlan yet I was tring to get as much as I could from Jalpa and surroundings. I am new to looking for my ancestors Iam trying to get an angle at this if there is one maybe there isnt.Ived found 26 people so far with the little that i know and people like yourself helping people like me it helps alot I think Nochistlan will be my next stop any suggestion that might put me in the right direction. oh before I forget which last names sound like Nochistlan? Dad side: Perez ,Frias, Villarreal,Salas Mom side: Duran,Cocolan,Lozano,Martinez. The last names I found with the new grandparents I found Dad side: Silva ,Huerta ,Rodriguez ,Munoz ,Medina ,Cuarenta and Mom side:Alvarez,Lopez,Figueroa,Juaquin, I didnt plan to write this much sorry

Comentario

I have studied some records there but haven't fully landed on the area yet (although I am going backwards, from older ancestors to earliest), seen Duran and Lozano in the same record make me think it could it be related to Nochistlan, it was just a guess more than knowledge though, I have some Lozano from there on my ancestors but haven't had the time to study them, those names seams very prolific there, same as Frias, Perez and Rodriguez, since very early in time. Don't hesitate asking here in the forums, there is lots of knowledgeable people that can help, I myself found many interesting facts here.

Comentario

Well, It wasn't a genealogical tree, those relationship diagrams where only to point out the "parentesco" and the degree of it. Thus if just one line is at question, all other individuals are left out (unfortunately for us). This information where not meant for the individuals but rather for the ecclesiastical authorities to check, thus they have to simplify it, putting extra information (including the names of the husbands/wifes) could made difficult to understand, something that they would not likely want to bother with.

As a side note the 1st degree are brothers, and goes on from there. Also if there was more than one line of relationship then they would add a diagram for each line.

Do any of you have account with Ancestry.com and can look up names?

I want to look up "Angon" in the Zacatecas or Jalisco area years 1600 - 1750's.

Hello Bob,

I too descend from Juan Miguel Lozano and Lorenza Diaz de Sandi and have the following information for 3 of their daughters:

1. Luisa m. Ignacio Bernardo Gonzalez on May 6, 1752 in Teocaltiche. The marriage record states that Luisa is 'originaria de'
el Agostadero.
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-19052-55616-23?cc=1874591&wc…

2. Ana Gertrudis m. Francisco Lorenzo Perez Gallo on May 10, 1756 in Teocaltiche. The marriage record states Ana to be 'originaria de' la hacienda de Senor San Jose, which is probably the hacienda San Jose de Ajojucar. Ana is also listed with the surname Trillo.

http://vamonosalbable.blogspot.com/2013/06/la-hacienda-de-san-jose-de-a…

3. Juana Maria aka Juana Maria de los Dolores. baptized Sept 17, 1752 and born Sept. 9, 1752. Juana m. Manuel Victoriano Gonzalez de Hermosilo on October 30, 1775 in Teocaltiche. The marriage record states that Juana was 'originaria de' la hacienda de San Jose [de Ajojucar]. I am uncertain whether this is the daughter of Lorenza Diaz de Sandi, since the marriage record lists Juana's mother as Teresa. Since I can not find a any records for Juan Miguel Lozano and Teresa Diaz, I am assuming that the mother's name was written in error. Juana and Manuel Victoriano are my 5th great grandparents.

I am very grateful for my copy. It cost me, no lie, about $14.00 dollars. It's the 1951 edition. The quality of the paper is not that great since it's post WWII paper. The paper looks almost tan. The central public Library in Los Angeles has a copy in the genealogy reference section. I had been photocopying that book until I got my copy.

If you want, shoot me an email on the particular surname that interests you and I will scan those pages that refer. The book has two major sections. The first part deals with Spanish land grants, who inhereted what, sold what to whom, some quotations from last wills and testaments (where the genealogy gems come from). The second part of the book is entitled Bioteca de Occidente Conquistadores y Conquista Fundadores y Fundaciones Pobladores y Plobazones - Incluso lo de Ameca.

P 67 of this second section for Garcia de Alba reads as follows:

I am interested in reading this book or any scanned documents from "Bioteca de Occidente Conquistadores y Conquista Fundadores".

Is there a digitized copy?

I descend from the surname Arriola (Arreola). My research on this line is stuck in Cocula, Jalisco (1771).

As a kid my maternal grandfather would tell me that his father told him that there were 4 surnames that founded the city of Union de Tula.

He mentioned his own, Arreola(Arriola) and Topete. I could not remember the rest of the surnames until 30 plus years later I searched Union De Tula on Wikipedia and read the other 2 (Lazcano and Villasenor).

Still not sure if Lazcano and Villasenor were mentioned by my grandfather.

My Grandfather was born in Santa Catarina, Jalisco, Mex. His grandfather, Camilo Arreola, travelled back and forth from Palmar de Los Pelayos and Santa Catarina.

My great grandpa x6, was married in Cocula Jalisco (1771).

Any Arriola (Arreola) info would be greatly appreciated

Hello Gil, We lived in Union for several years, in fact our neighbors were Arriolas, but have since died. You are correct in that the name Tula was a combination of Topete, Villasenor, Loscano, and Arriola. People with these names still live in Union.
Union is a great place to visit. They celebrate La Fiesta de Octubre this year from about the 11th to the 19th.

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18721-66057-35?cc=1874591&wc…

So, it is possible they are the same person, but the ones that call Juan and only Juan (such as his marriage to Rosa de la Cueva in 1738 only call him Juan. I think what I am going to do is try to review the baptisms in Tecolotlan and see if I can find a baptism for a Juan Garcia de Alva. I would basically start around 1704 and move forward.

Hello Sergio,
I'm sorry that I didn't see your response earlier. I think our previous conclusion that there are two Juans was correct. Here is the baptism for Juan Francisco:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18721-66057-35?cc=1874591&wc….

I couldn't find a baptism for Juan. I also checked for Matrimonial Information for the 1746 marriage of Juan Francisco but found nothing. However, I did locate the baptism for Maria, daughter of Juan and Rosa de la Cueva dated: 7 May, 1746

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18721-63607-43?cc=1874591&wc…

So I guess, unless Juan was a total cad, that is pretty definitive evidence that there were two separate sons of Manuel Garcia de Alba and Nicolasa Santa Ana: Juan and Juan Francisco!!

Thank you both for clarifying this name information - I descend from two branches of the Garcia de Alba family.

1) Francisco Garcia de Alba who was married to Casilda de Ortega also had another wife (or mistress) named Teodora de la Madriz. Together they had a daughter named Maria Josepha Garcia de Alba. She married Manuel Antonio Pérez de Alencastre:

Page 353, File 1154559 bottom left. Also lists witnesses as Antonio Garcia de Alba and Catalina Gonzalez de la Madriz (were they sisters or mother and daughter?).
Location: Corazon De Jesus,Tecolotlan,Jalisco,Mexico, July 25 1724.

From this union their grand-daughter Antonia Ubalda would marry Antonio Jose Martin Michel.
This line of Michels intersect with the Topetes who descend from Catalina de Ortega, sister of Casilda de Ortega.

2) But I also descend from Francisco Garsia de Alba and Casilda de Ortega through the above mentioned union. My great-great grandfather was Florencio Topete Garcia de Alba and through his mother Josefa Dolores Garcia de Alba, her great-grand parents were Juan Francisco and Rosa Garcia de Alba.

Hello Mr. Topete, I too have been working some with the families around the area of Tecolotlan, Ayutla, Ejutla, and Union de Tula. I think you may be having the same problem that others of us have had..to many people with the same name. There are actually two persons, father and son, named Francisco Garcia de Alba. The first was married to Casilda de Ortega. Their son was married to Teodora de la Madriz. There is a document that you will find very interesting and helpful where Francisco II attempts to reestablish his marriage with Teodora.
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18404-63779-54?cc=1874591&wc…
Further evidence is that the burial of Francisco II mentions him being a widower of Teodora
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18562-9165-48?cc=1874591&wc=…

Antonio Garcia de Alba was also a son of Francisco and Casilda de Ortega. They were married in Autlan 29 June, 1707 and it does appear that Teodora and Catalina were sisters.

My husband is descended from the Garcia de Alba family through Luis, Manuel, and Fernando (Hernando). Also through the Michels and Cobarrubias. If I can help you in any way please ask. I love genealogy!

Hello Deedra, thank you for clarifying which Francisco Garcia de Alba I should be focused on with the attached links. I had the information regarding Antonio but I wasn't ready to link Teodora to her sister since up until your email, I didn't know Teodora (Theodora) full name was Gonzales de la Madris.

As for my other family connections my direct line only links to the Corona's very early where I have Juan Michel-Ordonez married to Graciana Corona. This information was passed to me be Alfredo Pena Perez though I have no paper trail to confirm what I think is the understood Michel lineage amongst the families.

And the only Cobarrubias so far is through one of the Michel brothers marrying Juana Uribe Cobarrubias circa 1750.

Hi Gil,

I think it is FranciscA, because of the a on "española." It says she was single and unfortunately does not list her parents, so I can't say for certain whether she was a sister of Theodora and Catalina Gonzalez de la Madriz.

Deedra, I believe we met at the Nueva Galicia Genealogy Society of SoCal last month. Look forward to sharing more of our family trees. :)

Each of us benefits when we work together--and this is a major find. Thank you for sharing.
I too have this line through Francisco and Casilda's son: Fernando Garcia de Alba and Clara Gusman de Velasco. I checked on this book (Ameca Protofundacion Mexicana; by Jesus Amaya Topete) and it is currently unavailable for sale anywhere, but there is a copy at UC Berkley--I'm not sure if they would allow a loan.

I know that many of us have Garcia de Alba lines and also Gomes, Michel, Dias, Cobian, and others from this area--this information would be extremely helpful.

Thank you

Let me if I can find that book I am sure I would be very interesting for my
own research!

Hello Marthaharo, and thank you for replying!

I descend directly from Manuel García de Alba y Ortega (born in 1678 in Ameca), the son of Francisco García de Alba and Casilda de Ortega Maldonado. Manuel married Nicolasa Santa Ana in 1704 in Tecolotlán. Their daughter, Casilda García de Alba y Santa Ana (named after her paternal grandmother, matronymic), married Juan Martín de Aguilar of Cocula. Juan Martín and Casilda had Lorenza de Aguilar y García de Alba, my fifth great-grandmother.

As Amaya Topete describes in his book, the first patriarch of the family was Francisco García de Alba who lived in Ayutla during the 16th century, and whose descendants spread all over central Jalisco. I found this out, because when searching for Francisco García de Alba in Google Books, an excerpt came up with these words and attributing as a preview of "Ameca, protofundación mexicana" by Amaya Topete.

Here's the excerpt:

"Un patriarca de la región, don Francisco García de Alba, se instaló por 1563 en la villa de San Miguel (Ayutla), por merced que le hizo el primer virrey Velasco, de tierras "en la parte y lugar donde hubiere",

En 1693, el bisnieto homónimo [which means "of the same name"] de García de Alba agregó a la propiedad heredada, otra colindante, que por cien pesos le mercedó el virrey conde de Galve; había casado con una señora Ortega Maldonado [which is Casilda] tía de los Topete,"

And here are the links to the excerpt:

Books that are listed as out of print, etc may be true. When this is the case you need to hunt down private collectors or private libraries that are selling the book. With luck any book can be located. I found a copy of Ameca, Protofundación Mexicana por Amaya, Jesús. It is quite a bit of money, about $400 it ships from Mexico City, Librería Tardes en la Alameda.
