I heard something similar about the Viramontes families in Tlaltenango,
Zacatecas use to be Miramontes. Except something to the effect that
they changed name cause of misunderstanding due to repeated first
names...

Are you searching Miramontes Family?

Tammy,

Are you still researching your Miramontes family? How is your progress
coming along? Do you know if your father-in-law had a sister named
Maria Refugio?

Miramontes. I believe the ranch they are from is named Los Reales.

Sorry, I cannot help you.

Also, thank you for the invitation to visit your
uncle, but my wife is having an operation that same
week and I'll be intending her.

You know what they say, "It never hurts to ask. . ."

thanks,

After I get my DNA analyzed, we can make a comparison.
 It should be interesting.

Linda,

My result was no surprise but a confirmation of what I already knew by
word of mouth, particularly from my late grandmother. You can now
find my folder in the files section. Unfortunately, my maternal
(mtDNA) branch goes back only to my g2-grandmother: my mother is
Villagrana, her mother Martel, her mother Colunga, and then Alvarado.
I just haven't been able to break thru that wall. I suspect that she
has roots in neighboring Nayarit and church records from Nayarit
haven't yet been extracted to the IGI.

Your comments about your mother's eyes and skin are very interesting,
which only shows that physical traits are not necessarily correlated
to DNA haplogroups.

Best regards
Victor

I should have given you this site:

http://members.tripod.com/~GaryFelix/index63.htm
It's under Dna on our links page..

I went with Gary Felix's site because they have a Mexico board that
will keep the records for 25 years and will notify me if there are any
match's they think are close enough, I've had two responses from
people with ancestors from Guanajuato besides Victor's response. It's
the family tree dna site in the messages from the past on this message
board.

Doing the mtdna was just another step for me in putting all the pieces
of my family history together. Now if I can just get a male member of
my family to do the same. They enjoy the fruits of my 5 years of
genealogy research but balk at spending money for a test... The rates
seem to be within the same range regardless of where you have it done,
a simple swab of your mouth is all it takes.

Erlinda,

May I ask what company you used for your test and how you went about
researching the prices, services, etc.?

Hi Victor, how exciting to even think that someone from a small group
like this could be a 4 marker match even if it happened a while back
in time.. I find it amazing!! I looked into the files but don't see
your genealogy, are you posted here or anywhere else? I have my
maternal line on Ancestry family tree. In a time reference I can only
take my female line back to abt 1800 and know nothing before that. My
mother was Gutierrez, her mother Villanueva, her mother Mendez, her
mother Fernandez and her mother Barbosa.. the line stops there. To be
honest I was surprised to find this a native line since my mother was
blond and blue eyed and her mother was extremely fair too. They were
from Tamazula Jalisco but the Fernandez line may have come from
somewhere else. I guess 200 years is nothing compared to a history in
genetics that goes back 30,000 years.. but we have to start somewhere
to find we all more alike than different. I did some reading and found
that a few Eskimo

Linda,

My mtDNA test came also haplogroup A. My maternal great-grandmother
was from the Jalisco area.

Compare our numbers and see that we match on four markers. Not very
close, but it means we share a common female mother thousands of years
ago:

These are cool discussions. Does anyone ever remember what the mom's would do if the "Moiyeda" of a baby would fall? In our family if the soft spot of the top of the baby fell or became sunken I remember seeing some kind of involved procedure where a rag was placed over

Good morning,

Just got my mtdna results back, don't understand most of but my
female line is group A which is pre-Columbian, they take it back
30,000 years... guess we've been here a while! The A group extends
down into South America so our female Indio ancestor was native
born...  Our male ancestors may have been from Spain but they
married Native American women along the line.

This test does not show any of the women from our male lines, just
female to female so it doesn't prove our Espanol or Mulato blood but
the records prove that, so ...I'm happy just having a more complete
picture of our family tree. My proven female line is from Jalisco
Mexico.

Joseph:

I don't think that Padrinos were necessarily blood relatives. I know
that in my family, neither of my parents' padrinos are close
relatives. This is purely based on anecdotal evidence, but I think
padrinos were often childhood friends, with which the parents had a
close comeraderie or even respected members of the community (since
traditionally, these would take in the child should he or she be
orphaned, etc. and one would want the child to be well raised).

Given the prevelance of clusters of names (due to surnames often
being assigned to indigenous people, etc.) it is likely that two
(unrelated) friends in a rancho would have the same surname.

A ventosa is as follows: Mother would get a meduim size water
glass and pour a little alcohol  into it and swirl it in the glass;
then she would light it with a match and immediately place it on the
area where the sprain was. The heat would cause the muscle to pull
upward into the glass and that would release the tension on it. The
glass would remain there a few seconds and then she would repeat the
procedure. My husband used to enjoy getting them whenever he had a
back problem. She used them mostly on the torso. The extremeties she
would massage with her hands after she applied an ointment. The one
thing she did not believe in was "el mal de ojo". She called that
brujerias (witchcraft). This is where they would apply a raw egg on
the body and this would

I would just like to add a comment to interesting information. Spain was influenced tremendously by the Mohammedan peoples' occupation. From 711 a.d. to 1492 a.d. Spain experienced the assimilation of many cultural traditions from Semitic, Arabic- and Aramaic-speaking peoples. Names, behaviors, foods, etc., were brought to Mexico and other parts of the western hemisphere by the invaders from Spain. Not everyone who left Spain was a Catholic Christian- willing to kiss the Pope's ring.

The forty day tradition following childbirth is quite ancient. It is part of the Mosaic Law, the Law of Moses, and appears in the Old Testament in the Bible. Without a doubt the ancient Hebrews and other people of the Middle East practiced this tradition, including in Anatolia, modern day Turkey.

great I just went and re-examined the original record and found what I
thought was the 5th of October was really the 25th of October making the
13th of the current month much easier for me to comprehend.
