Andrea, with this new data, now I can disregard the speculation of Manuel de Escobedo being the son of Antonio Carlos de Escobedo and Salvadora De La Torre. In the baptismal document, it clearly states that the parents of Manuel de Escobedo were Joseph de Escobedo and Juana de Renteria. Now the next step is to find out who were the paternal and maternal grandparents of Manuel de Escobedo? I greatly appreciate the information you have provided.

My genealogy is still a work in progress but to answer your question, on my paternal line Barbosa I've hit a dead end, as my ancestor who I believed to be born around 1740 was from Cotija, Michoacan, he died in Tamazula de Gordiano, Jal. in 1811, and Cotija's records have been lost.

On my maternal side I have gotten further back but all in Mexico, I would love to find one of my ancestors on their journey to America and then track them in Europe, that would be very exciting!

I would need more information to positively identify your grandmother Aurelia Lomeli. Is her second surname Carranza? Do you have a birthdate or any other information that would help indentify her? The church would have information on your great aunt that was a nun.

Hi Nancy,

All of this information that I posted here on your great grandmother’s ancestry came from baptismal or marriage records. Here is a little more information on some of yourancestors:

Thomas Regalado (bap. 12/Dec/1731) is the son of Bernardo Regalado and María Quiteriia Orosco (aka Losa, aka Ramirez). That María Quiteria used three different surnames may help in figuring out her ancestry.

Tomas was married to María Alejandra Cortez, (daughter of Nicolas Cortez and Gertrudis (?Romero) I am not sure about Gertrudis’s surname. Thomas had a second marriage to María Margarita Losa, but you descend from the first wife. A grandchild’s baptismal record erroneously names her as a grandmother but she was a step grandmother . Due to Thomas’s mother using the “Losa” surname often, I believe that there is a strong chance that his second wife is related to his mother.

I have much more info on some of the ancestors of some of the wives that I posted in your Lomeli line. I also previously posted info on the probable ancestral line of Carlo Lomellini. Some other genealogists have posted here in nuestrosranchos info on the ancestry of María Benavides.

In the study of genealogy i have often found instances where the person takes the surname of the mother instead of the father. Sometimes you will find instances where they take the surname of a grandparent, or greatgrandparent, instead of a parent. This happened often in the sixteenth and seventeenth hundreds in Nueva Galicia.

I forgot to add that José Feliciano “Felis” or “Felix” Plasencia” had “José Feliciano. Plasencia Alias Fierro” in a record.

José Feliciano Plasencia Alias Fierro is the son of Francisco Plasencia and Madalena Fierro

María Maxima Arambula (bap 8/July/1792) is the daughter of Juan José González de Arambula and María Petra Lucia Lopez De Elizalde

José Feliciano Plasencia Alias Fierro and María Maxima Arambula were married 9/Nov/1809 in Tepatitlan. Jalisco

Another ancestor of yours who also used multiple surnames is María Quiteriia Orosco (aka Losa, aka Ramirez). Quiteria was married to Bernardo Regalado.

Welcome Alice and Hi Esther!

A part of my family is from the same area as well. I have Hernandez, De la Paz, Lopez, Sevilla, Cos y Leon, Garcia, Ramirez, Guzman, Quezada, Angel, and Ascencio de Torres in my family tree. I also have three of the six names you're currently working on now (Villalpanda, Sayabedra, and Alvarez) and so I may be able to help you with them.

Carricillo is now known as San Jose de la Paz.

I thought Carricillo was the farm community in the highlands but this makes more sense. I have other references to Puerto De Catalina which is right outside of San Jose De La Paz. The San Rafael is always refereed to as San Rafael de Los Altos. I will study these links and see if one is close to Los Altos. We could be related as my paternal Grandmother is an Alvarez and her mother was a Quezada. Also have Angel, Garcia, Gusman, Hernandez, Asencio De Leon, Ramirez. Maternal Grandmother was a Hernandez but from Guanajuato. Alvarez line is pretty interesting and goes way back.
Thanks for the info,

Alice,

If I’m not mistaken, our most recent common Alvarez ancestor is Mariano Alvarez del Castillo, but I bet we have other lines in common since our families come from the same region.

All of the San Rafael locations I shared with you earlier are located within the municipios of Jesus Maria, Manuel Doblado, and Arandas. They’re all in the same general area covered by the parish churches located in those towns.

Yesterday I found the 1792 padron for San Pedro Piedra Gorda and it’s a good one. Compared to other padrones this one is very clearly written and descriptive.

Here is the link to the page of the padron where you’ll find Jose Manuel Mata & Maria Anastacia Villalpando.

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:9392-B5S3-CD?i=172&cc=1883388&cat=319912

Jose Manuel Mata and Maria Anastacia Villalpando live a couple of doors down from Eugenio Villalpando and his wife Nicolasa Raza, so, it’s very possible Maria Anastacia and Eugenio are related. (Eugenio sometimes appears as Eugenio Flores Villalpando.)

There are a good number of threads on this site dedicated to Villalpando that you may find useful: http://www.nuestrosranchos.org/search/node/villalpando

San Rafael de los Altos is shown on this page of the padron:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:9392-B5S3-JD?i=156&cc=1883388&cat=319912

If you look around you'll probably also find ancestors on the other pages in Capulin de Galvanes, Cienega de Galvanes, and Milpillas de Ayo el Grande.

I hope this helps.

Comentario

mralvarez

Thank you so much for all the information.
The Mariano Alvarez Del Castillo is correct and also continues on to the Asencio De Torres line.
I have been researching the San Rafael locations and it appears that the #118 makes the most sense as it is proximate Manuel Doblado, Arandas and San Jose De La Paz. Amazing that you found the San Rafael De Los Altos Census. I did not know that these even existed. The individuals in the households are all children and spouses of Jose Manuel Mata. It appears that there are 3 households in this Rancho and I assume that it would have to be located within the San Pedro De Gorda parish? I wonder if there is a map somewhere of the census locations.
Also is there an easy way to search the Diocese records. When I attempted to search I ran into a long list of links that I had no idea of what they consisted.
Anyway your assistance is very much appreciated and hopefully I can offer some assistance as well.

Regards,

Alice

It's likely many of us have seen something like this before. It happens, and for any number of reasons.

I can document an instance of three brothers using their maternal last name rather than their paternal one once they reached adulthood. This was in the late 1800s and their reason for doing so has been lost in time.

I wish I knew why they chose to drop their paternal name. Was their father abusive? Did he abandon them? The change frustrated me immensely when I was trying to make sense of the records and trace their paternal line. I later learned from their decedents that it caused headaches for some of them too when they needed birth certificates and marriage licenses back in the 1930s and earlier.

Seferino Alonso and Maria Eugenia Tiscareno

Hello Nuestros Ranchos Forum,

Does anyone have any information on Seferino Alonso and Maria Eugena
Tiscareno? Specifically the parents.

Hi Danny

So I took a quick look at family search and I am afraid that the parish where Seferino Alonso's grandchildren were baptized has records only as back as 1799.

I would focus on finding the baptismal records for all of Seferino's children, if you believe they were born in that same town of Salinas.

If you truly want to find them you can go page by page in around the years you think they were born. I did this and I was able to find my ancestors who had been indexed incorrectly in family search.

Good luck

Pinedos en Zacatecas y Jalisco

As far as I have been able to tell, the nexus of the Pinedos in Southern Zacatecas and Northern Jalisco seems to be Jerez/Monte Escobedo. Leonardo de la Torre y Berumen seems to think they are all descended or related (as slaves or servants to descendants) to a Rodrigo de Pinedo or Pineda that was one of the captains fighting the Chichimeca War that were the original settlers of Jerez.

Chris:

Thinking about this a bit more, it is really going to be like looking for a needle in a haystack to try to find what town your great-grandfather was born in. I think that if you know yout g-g-grandfather's name and you suspect he was in the Mexican calvary that may be a more fruitful avenue to take.

Another alternative is to pull the "informaciones matrimoniales" film for your great-grandfather's first marriage. These often list grandparents as part of the due diligence to determine lack of cosanguinity.

Military Records of Genealogical Value

The following records include information on most soldiers and can be useful in researching your family:

* Hojas de servicios (Service records). Lists of officers’ name, birth date, birthplace, family information, and military ranks and assignments.
* Expedientes personales (Personal petition files). Personal requests by servicemen such as their petitioning for military advancements after citing their military record. The files may include a number of documents of genealogical interest, such as family baptismal and marriage certificates.
* Listas de quintas o conscripciones (Conscription lists). Lists of new recruits and in some cases a census of all males eligible for military service. The town or municipal archives (archivo de ayuntamiento) sometimes house these records.
* Filiaciones (Enlistments). Lists of common soldiers in the military, excluding officers. Enlistments include the soldiers’ name, birth date and birthplace, parents’ names, residence, religion, marital status, and physical description. They may also list the soldier’s military history. Enlistments are less likely than service sheets to be indexed.
* Padrones and listas de revistas (Census records). Censuses of military men and their families were often taken in various areas. The census records may include all the citizens who were served and protected by the military outpost.

For more information on the military records of Mexico, including where the records are found, see:

Ryskamp, George R. Tracing Your Hispanic Heritage. Riverside, Calif.: Hispanic Family History Research, 1984, pp. 591-632. (FHL book 946 D27r; computer number 0256085.)

Locating Other Military Records

Records of military service in Mexico were kept by several government agencies. Some of these records have been centralized at the Archivo General de la Nacion and the Archivo Histórico Militar Mexicano. Others can be found in different state archives as well as in the municipio archives (archivos del ayuntamiento). The Family History Library has some military records that cover the 1500s to 1900s.

The Archivo General de la Nacíon has several collections that contain valuable military records. These collections can be searched in the Archivo Histórico Militar (Historical Military Archive). Some of these collections are:

* Guerras y Pensiones (wars and pensions). These date from 1793 to 1900 and contain petitions for pensions from families who had soldiers who died in the war. These include servicemen’s name, spouse and children, date and place of birth and marriage, and place of residence.
* Listas de Revistas (list of musters). From this collection you can find the servicemen’s name, place of residence, age, civil statues, race, years in the service, and number of family members.
* Méritos y Servicios (merits and services records). These records start in 1524 and continue to 1634. They contain genealogies, biographies, names of soldiers, and occasionally their date and place of birth.

Another archive that has military records but is difficult to access is the Archivo de la Secretaría de la Defensa Nacional (Archive of the Secretary of National Defense) in Mexico City. Some of the collections include:

* Registros de Comisiones Militares (registers of military comissions).
* Hojas de Servicio Militar (military service records).
* Cancelados (files on former officers)

These records have extensive information on the soldiers and officers and their families. In order to visit this archive you need a letter of recommendation and the archive’s permission to do research.

Another military record in Mexico is the Cartillas del Servicio Militar Nacional (cards of conscripts of the national military service), which covers the last century to the present and lists persons from 18 to 48 years old. These cards are issued to all who enter the military and include a photo of the conscripted and his full name, age, date and place of birth, parents, and civil status. These records can be found either in the Ayuntamientos (municipio offices) or the Department of the Secretary of National Defense.

The above collections are only a few of many that are found throughout Mexico. Always make sure you know the history of the area in which your ancestor served, and find out what archives are available for that area and what records they contain.

Thanks for the comments. They were really helpful...as I may end up having to pursue the military record approach. Per Joseph's advice, I've also posted the two Informacion Matrimonal forms I had for Nicanor Pineda/Pinedo under Albums. If you look at it, you'll notice that both forms say that Nicanor is "originario y vecino de esta ciudad (Tlaltenango)."

Further one form suggests he was born around 1884, and the other form around 1881; while the Texas border crossing record suggests 1890. Knowing this, I still have been unsuccessful finding a birth or baptism record for Nicanor Pineda in Tlaltenango around this time. That's why I was thinking that perhaps he was born someplace else.

If anyone wants to look at the forms, please feel free...and let me know if they give you any insight or ideas. Thank and I hope to hear from you.

Chris:

I had never seen an informacion matrimonial from such a recent period. To tell you the truth there is a lot less information there than what I imagined and certainly less that what I have seen in informaciones from one hundred fifty years earler. Perhaps intermarriage was more of a problem back then.

As far as "originario y vecino de esta ciudad" it could mean a number of things. He could have been born in a nearby rancho but baptized in a different parrish (Momax, Atolinga, Tepechitlan, Joaquin Amaro, etc.) Also he could have moved there at a young age in which case he "had always lived there" as far as he and the priest were concerned. Usually they would only note when people moved to the place as adults or still lived in another place at the time of marriage.

If Nicanor's parents are not listed there, where are you getting his parents' names from? Have you seen your grandfather's baptism certificate? That should definitely have his four grandparents' names as should your grandfather's social security application which you can order under a freedom of information act request. Do you know when he passed away?

There are also naturalization records which you can request through a freedom of information act request as well. The National Archives has some of the older ones filmed, though I am not familiar as to how to navigate that quagmire.

Comentario

Here is another tidbit clue in your puzzle to find your great-grandfather's birth Chris. His first wife was definitely from the area around Tlaltenango... actually from the next town over in Tepechitlan...

Parents:

NATIVIDAD GODOY
Marriages:
Spouse: FELIPE MINJARES
Marriage: 05 OCT 1864
M606161 1848 - 1873 0445049

And a sister:
MARIA MARGARITA MINJAREZ GODOY
Christening: 21 FEB 1869 Tepechitlan, Zacatecas, Mexico
Parents:
Father: FELIPE MINJAREZ Family
Mother: NATIVIDAD GODOY
C600817 1867 - 1875 0444031

I see now where Nicanor's parents are mentioned in the second marriage dispensation. The mother's name is Pioquinta but the last name is either not there or difficult to make out. I am reading "Rosa" or :"Rosas" or "Losa"

And all of the Pedro Pinedos that come up in IGI for the relevant years. If only we were certain of your g-g-grandmother's name we would rule out these names definitively or figure out whether one of them is the right one. They are all from the towns I mentioned earlier. I imagine, however, if his first wife was from Tepechitlan he would have had to meet her at an early age and therefore must have lived in Tlaltenango or maybe Atolinga or Totatiche.

Have you tried DNA? I have a PINEDO lineage y-DNA test from my cousin.

Auturo,

Thanks again for taking this on and for your insights. I've been looking for Pineda records for some time now, and I've gotten discouraged at times at the lack of progress on my own Pineda line, even as my other family line research has been very productive.

Anyway, your most recent findings reminded me that I found the burial record for Antonia Minjarez awhile back. It confirms your findings, somehat: her parents are listed as Felipe Minjarez and Maria Natividad GURROLA, not GODOY. Not sure what to make of that, but perhaps I can follow up and see what I can find in the Tepechitlan records, or other nearby towns. I've uploaded this film in the Albums section.

As far as the names of Nicanor's parents goes, perhaps you're right: I thought it read "____dosa" meaning the name could be Mendosa or Cardosa, but I'll keep in mind it might be Rosa or Losa. Unfortunately, I don't really have any other resources to work from. Nicanor Pineda died when my grandfather was 15, before he was old enough to ask about his ancestry. My grandfather was born 1930 in Laredo, Texas where I'm not sure the baptism records are as in-depth as I've found them to be in Mexico. What's also interesting is that my grandfather was born when Nicanor Pineda was age 46 and as far as we know, my grandfather was his first child.

I'll see what else I can find...thanks again,
Chris

Ana González Florida II, ES H.L. deL Cap. Francisco Gutíerrez Rubio y de Ana González Florida- I

Gracias, Alma Gonzalez Hermosillo

Hola Daniel,

a Jose (Mujer).

Armando,

Hi Mary,

I have an Ancestry account and looked there and there's a family tree that for a Leandra Castaneda married to a Rito Gonzalez. They have her parents as Rodrigo Castaneda and Leonides Romo. It is Ancestry so I'm not sure how accurate it is, but they have actual pictures of her and Rito Gonzalez so they may have more knowledge than others.

Dear Mary and Paige,

Rodrigo Castañeda and Leonidas Romo are the parents of a Leandra Castaneda. But there are many issues with this Leandra. She was baptized on 14/Mar/1886 in Aguascalientes

The Leandra Castaneda that you are looking for is from Zacatecas, and from the same town as María Leandra Losano Castaneda.

Rick

Comentario

I have researched this Leandra Castaneda but she was baptized in 1885 my grandmother was born in 1890. The entry in Ancestry was entered by my sister but I do not believe it is my grandmother to many contradictions.

Thank You

Comentario

The account on Ancestry is my sisters and she has connected these people as my grandmothers parents. I am in doubt because this Leandra was baptized in 1885 and was born in Aguascaliente. My grandmother was born in 1890 in Zacatecas Mexico.
Thank You

Dear Mary,

On a previous post I gave you the answer. I will post it again.

I believe that Leandra Castañeda is the same person known as María Leandra Losano Castañeda,. The location, place and time all fit. So her father’s surname is Losano and her mother’s surname is Castañeda.

Leandra Castañeda was born about the 26th or 27th Feb/1871 in Zacatecas. You can comb the records in Zacatecas around this birth date and look for baptismal and birth records to get information on her parents and grandparents.

Hello Rick.

This is what I see:

"... Ant[onio] hilario Ynd[io] orig[inario] de S[an] Gasp[ar] de la felig[recia] de Xalostot[itlan] Vez[ino] de / esta de mas dies a[ños] hijo leg[itimo] de Ju[an] Fran[cisco] y de Cath[arina] Luisa Y a M[aria] / Ant[onia] M[ulata] desta felig[recia] en S[an] el Serro Gordo de S[an] Ant[onio] hija leg[itima] de / Joachin de Cerbantes dif[unto] Y de Ant[onia] hern[andez] ..."

(It seems like the "S[an]" in front of "el Serro Gorro" was written down there by mistake)

There are no last names for the parents of Antonio Hilario because he is "Yndio".

I hope this may help.

Comentario

I think that is Francisco because back then they would abbreviate names by writing the last letter smaller and above the rest. That is what I have read but I might be wrong. This one is a tough document to read.

Comentario

Thank you G Alvarez, Ruben, and Esther.

I agree with all of you that it says Francisco and that it is not the surname Franco. I was hoping that this was Antonio Franco and Ysabel Cervantes’s marriage récord, but it is now clear that these are different people.

The Antonio Franco that I am looking for was married for a second time on 2/Sep/1788 to Maria Manuela Luera, daughter of Thomas Luera and Juana Gertrudis Lopez. Their marriage record names her parents, states that he is a widower, and that his previous wife is named Ysabel Cervantes. I was hoping to find the record of his first marriage to find out his parent’s names.

Thank you,
Rick A. Ricci

Comentario

The marriage record of Antonio Hilario Franco is the second record on the left side. I mistakenly wrote that it was in the top left corner.

Thanks,
Rick A. Ricci

Comentario

For his parents I see ..."hijo legmo de Ju Franco y de Catha Lucia..." so possibly Juan Franco and Catalina or Catarina Lucía.

For her parents I see "...hija legma de Joachin de Cerbantes difo y de Anta hern..." so it might be Joaquín de Cervantes, deceased, and Antonia Hernández.

I hope this helps.

Question?/Help

In the marriage doc of my ancestor Melchor Perez Ynfante and Michaela Vaez it mentions that she was Originaria Del Real, Minas Del Fresnillo?Where is this place located?

Hi Abram,

I been working on my friend’s ancestry which also has Melchor Perez Ynfante y Lopez and Micaela Vaez. My friend, Victorio, descends from Their son Melchor Manuel Perez.

The parents of Melchor Perez Ynfante y Lopez are Juan Perez Ynfante and Magdalena Lopez.

It says "Real y minas del fresnillo", and it should be the city of Fresnillo, Zacatecas. According to the RAE dictionary, "real de minas" is a town whose district has mines, especially silver mines. There are many towns whose name included the words Real, Real y minas or Real de minas like Guanajuato, Real de catorce, Pachuca, Zacatecas, etc.

Hello, my name is Diana Baca Ragin

I am trying to locate baptismal records or birth records for my Grandmother Aurora Cordero, her mother's name was Senorina Borrego and father Aurelio Cordero. She had a sister named Ana Rebeca Cordero and brothers Miguel and Aurelio Cordero. She was supposedly born in Guadalajara or Fresnillo Mexico. Birth date is 1989 according to some border crossing information I have located. Other names that appear on siblings baptismal records are for my Great Grandparents Andrea Albasta and Margarita and Fuburio Lopez. It is hard to read so I am not sure I have the spellings correctly. Baptismal Records are in Fresnillo Mexico.

If someone could point me in the right direction I would appreciate it. I have been searching for years through online methods. I have located baptismal records for her siblings but not for her.

I would appreciate any help you may be able to give me.

Thank you,

Diana

have never found. Don't be surprised if you never find the one that you are

Hi Rick,

I’m so excited and can’t believe I actually found someone on this forum with shared ancestors. Do you have your family tree on Ancestry or family search? I have a question though, Nicolasa Alba’s fathers name was Nicolas de Ayala and mother’s Nicolasa de Alba. Why would the daughter take the mothers last name and not the fathers? Maybe this is the reason I’m having a hard time finding records.

Thank you,
Esther

Comentario

Hi Esther,

Not only did they sometimes take the surname of the mother, sometimes they took the surname of a grandparent. I have even seen people take the surname of a greatgrandparent. This happened often in the 1500’s and 1600’s; and less in the 1700’s. I have even found some instances in the 1800’s where this has happened.

Thanks,
Rick

Comentario

Very interesting, I wonder why they did that.

You mentioned you had information on Cristobal Hernandez 3 women, would you please send me the information on these lines.

Cristobal Hernandez had family with three women.
I can more send more information on these lines.

I have another question and not sure if you know. So doing research on Ancestry.com I have noticed on peoples family trees they will have date of births on a person for example on Cristobal Hernandez (8 MAY 1667) but there are no records on ancestry that go back this far, wher would they have obtain this information from? I like to double check my work and confirm the information is correct before I add it my family tree.

Thank you,
Esther
