Nuestros Ranchos Site

I was able to access the 1930 Mexico Census records, but I didn't see any records for Tlaltenango, Zacatecas or Torreon, Coahuila. Can someone help me?

put Ortiz in the search window and then click on user. if that doesn't
give results then click on "Advanced" and put "ortiz" in for the surname
and that should give you all members of the group who have the Ortiz
surname. then click on "contact"

Hello Emilie,
It's good to know that at least you can get in. I'm sorry that the images are so poor and the choices slim. I can't open the "register to use this..." below the email window. The "hand" cursor never turns into the hourglass, so nothing happens. Isn't ironic? I'd love to be able to look up my Onates in Aguascalientes! Well, good luck, Alice

Hi, Alice and "Ybinsouthsac":

>From Arturo's link you can register for the pilot program. Click on "Register" without typing in your e-mail address at first, then the fields to register should come up. Otherwise you will just keep getting a message that your e-mail is not registered for the pilot program.

After you complete the registration fields and "submit", you should get a confirmation e-mail telling you that your account is activated. Remember to type in the funny code letters in the box in the blank field next to them before you click "submit".

Good luck,

Emilie

Emilie, have you been able to access it yet, I signed in, they acknowledged it but I still can't get in!

I've tried several times to access the Mexico 1930 census online through this link, with no success.
The link takes me to the Familysearch page, and asks for my email addrees. I enter it, and even though I'm registered on Familysearch.org, it states it doesn't recognize my email address. I try to click the register button below, but nothing opens and I can't seem to get any further. Could someone please let me know how to access the cesus online? Thanks so much, Alice

I definitely would love to have the link you have to get a
preview to the newLDS website. And if I register to view the 1930 Mexican Census on-line can you explain what that registration exactly involves or commits you to.

Joseph,

I don't know how it is in Rougemont, but the major public libraries in Southern California carry for "reference consultations" a number of phone books from México and, if you are lucky with a cooperatice librarian that is not overwhelmed with work, s/he might even look up some information for you, over the phone.

Efrain

It costs $62 but if you don't find other sources, it might be worth it.

http://www.mexicophonebooks.com/zacatecas.html

Zacatecas is the capital of the Mexico state of Zacatecas. The Zacatecas Phone Book contains both Yellow Pages and White Pages.

This telephone directory covers the majority of cities in this state.

Chris:

I am not aware of films that FHL has of Mexican miltary service. However, there do appear to be decent records... as to how easy they are to access and search that is another story:

Hi Welester,

Has anyone been able to decipher the meaning of these? They are similar to
the ones that I have seen in Coahuila (near Villa Union) on a ranch that is
owned by distant cousins.

Here is a find from the IGI on familysearch.org that you might find interesting. You should order the film and scan through it, using the batch number to find any collateral relatives. You should also find the contemporary baptisms film for Villanueva and see if they had any children there before moving... to Fresnillo or Zacatecas.

Katrina:

Your questions are very legitimate and I hope we can answer them for you. The Mexican geography bible for the 19th Century (and even to date perhaps) is Antonio Garcia Cuba's DIccionario Biografico y Geofrafico de Mexico. There is a digital version of this online that you can locate by going to the Links section of the site and then going down to the Geography section.

There is only one listing for "El Bote" and it is for "El Bote de Abajo y El Bote de Arriba" and they are basically two ranchos (villages or small group of rural dwellings) in the municipality of Fresnillo, Zacatecas.

When the record states the Sagrario de Zacatecas, I would veture to say that it is the old church/cathedral in the actual city of Zacatecas. If it simply states Zacatecas with no other city mentioned it must be THE Zacatecas.

As far as geographical divisions in Mexico, today there are only states and then municipalities below that. The municipalities often include many towns and villages so they would be similar to small counties. In the 19th Century there were cantons between the state and the municipality which would be more like a large county. Parishes (parroquias) are purely an ecclesiastical jurisdiction.

Esperanza

I read the questions you had regarding ranchos of yesteryear and there newer names. Rancho las Ranas near Atolinga is found in maps and now called Villahidalgo. My great-great grandparents were born there in the late 1700's and early 1800's. I visited there years ago and it is a beautiful countryside with many properties surrounded by stone fences. I've also read birth documents referring to this area as el monte de santa rosa. The relatives I found from there were Sandovals and Bugarins from nearby Atolinga.

If you go into the links section of the Nuestros Ranchos site, you will see a link to the Diccionario Biografico y Geografico de Mexico by Antonio Garcia Cubas...

That dictionary has an amazing number of locality names with descriptions and locations, including very, very small ranchos. The book was published in the late 1800s so it has the names of the ranchos prior to the Mexican Revolution.

For example for Ranas it states:

Rancho del distrito y municipalidad de Puruandiro, Estado de Michoacan con 340 habitantes; Otro del estado de Nuevo Leon, municpalidad de Lampazos; Otro del de Zacatecas, partido de Tlaltenango, municipio de Atolinga con 228 habitantes.

Which one of these are you looking for? The one in Atolinga? If so, you might be able to find it on a modern map of Zacatecas:

Creo que las mejores fuentes para lo que tu intentas serian los archivos de cruzadas de la frontera mexicana que se mantienen en microfilmes en el Archivo Nacional de EE.UU. y que tienen indice en Ancestry.com, pero cobran...

www.ancestry.com/search/db.aspx?dbid=1082

http://ssdi.rootsweb.com/
