Forums

Good Evening Arturo,
Thanks so much for the film numbers. I can't believe I missed them in the LDS catalog. My FHC is open tomorrow evening, so I'll order them right away. I'm afraid I don't have a scanner, but maybe the people at the FHC can upload it for me. Where do you want it uploaded to? I'm sure they will know how to accomplish this, but please let me know where. I'll follow as many leads as possible. Many thanks. Alice

Alice:

You can upload your scan to the Albums section, under "Sample Film and Record Scans".

To do so, click on ALBUMS from the main menu up top, then on the "Sample Films and Record Scans" folder and then click on the link that says "Add photo."

You can then select the file to upload and that is it!

Arturo,
I've completed a PAF5 from the Family Search site. The film that contains the only documentation available is #1092766. What's the next step? Thanks for your help, Alice

I do not understand what you mean when you say you have "completed a PAF5." Do you mean you have downloaded the software?

What you will need to do is enter every name that you have of your genealogy. For those where it is oral history that gave you the information, enter the name and date of the interview as the source. For the marriage you found in Panuco, enter the film and batch number as the source. Have you seen the actual document? It should list both the bride and groom's parents and likely their places of birth as well.

Once you have entered all of the names, you should be able to print out a report into an RTF (rich text) document which you can then upload to your member genealogy folder.

Have you downloaded the Nuestros Ranchos User Guide? It explains many of these steps.

Hello Arturo,
I may have a Master's Degree, but I'd be the first to admit, I'm not computer savvy. Sorry. I have a PAF5 icon on my desktop, so I believe it's downloaded. I'm focusing on my mother's side of my family for now. Both my parents are deceased and I have no documentation of her birthplace or date. I've viewed the films from Villa Garcia and Aguascalientes (there is conflict as to where she was born) that spanned years and have found neither her or either of her two brothers (deceased before I was born). My grandparents were also deceased before I was born; all I have is their names, no documentation. Does all this constitute oral history? The only documentation I have is of my greatgrandparents marriage on a Panuco film #1092766 that I checked out and actually viewed twice and made a hard copy. Only the fathers of the bride and groom were mentioned (which I was thrilled to find)with no birthplaces of anyone. I've viewed about 11 films investigating different angles and f
amily me
mbers, with no success. I've spent many hours compiling 30plus pages of Onates, Santelices, Candelas, and Valderramas from the group's file collection (for future use)with no real connection, only speculation. Don't worry, none of these names are entered into my PAF! Do you want me to upload the scant information I've completed on my PAF? Come on, I must have a primo out there!!! I've issued APB's for 19th and 20th Century Onates, Santelices, Candelas, and Valderramas with no results. Any help would be greatly appreciated technical or otherwise. Thanks so much. Alice

Alice:

It looks like you are on the right path. Please enter the names starting with your mother that you have. It sounds like lots of it is oral history, so just note it as such. The fact that there are only three or four generations is fine. What is important is that those few generations' information is clearly laid out and anyone seeing your chart can tell who is whose father, etc. I cannot tell this that from the information you now have in your folder.

Once you have entered all of the names, notes and sources, select your mother from the list of individuals, pull down the File Menu and Select "Print Reports." Select the "Books" tab and you will have the choice of printing an Ahnentafel (ancestry) chart or a Modified Register (descendancy) chart. If it is your mother, you should print out an Ahnentafel for her.

Look at this great guide that Maria Cortez put together:

http://www.nuestrosranchos.org/node/15482

If you are unsure about your mother's birthplace but you know she was born in Mexico, I would suggest you try to locate her social security application, which should list her parents name as well as place of birth as well as her immigration record. Do you know what year she immigrated and through what border crossing?

Do you mind uploading a scan of the marriage document that you have from Panuco or at least transcribing it? Also, taking a lead from Daniel, if the registro de matrimonio does not list parents or place names, perhaps the informacion matrimonial does. Have you yet looked at this film?

Hi, there. I just recently sent in my DNA test and do not really know what the next step is. I'm not sure if I will be contacted or if I need to call. Anyway, even if the Haro is on my mother's side, is that like checking the Haro for HER paternal side? I truly do not know how this works. Do you have any Haro lines that you are researching?

Thanks!

Haro DNA

Comment

Cristina:

If you are using FamilyTree DNA, you will be getting an email and then a packet of information in about six weeks from when you sent in your sample.

If you sent in your own DNA for testing, the only lineage it can be tested for is mtDNA (mitochondrial) which traces your mother's mother's mother... Females do not have Y chromosomes and therefore cannot use their own cells for Y-DNA testing.

If your mother's father was an Haro and you wanted to trace that Haro paternal lineage, you would need to have one of her brothers (or one of her brothers' sons) tested. I have been able to get five lineages by having relatives do tests for me:

1. My own YDNA - my father's father's father...
2. My own mtDNA - my mother's mother's mother...
3. My father's mtDNA - my father's mother's mother...
4. My first cousin (son of my mother's brother) 's YDNA - my mother's father's father...
5. My second-cousin (son of the son of the son of my #10 ancestor)'s YDNA - my father's mother's father's father...

Both of the maternal lines have come back indigenous and all three of the paternal lines have come back European.

Wow. OK, well, I think I'm on the wrong path, then. Well, maybe not exactly, but I sent mine to a place called Sorenson Labs. I guess they're working on a worldwide project and so I sent my free test in. I will find out about the other ones and will do as you suggested. I will ask one of my Haro cousins to submit the test once I find the right one.

Thanks so much!

Comment

Cristina:

Sorenson Molecular Genealogy is collecting a database of DNA along with genealogies to match up with the DNA in their database. They ask for volunteers who have compiled their own genealogies and are willing to donate their DNA sample but because of the confidentiality requirements they have for their project, they do not communicate the results to the volunteers. You can look them up yourself on their database by surname, though I submitted mine over a year ago and they still have not shown up. I don't know if my genealogy was not acceptable or what...

Listen up.........if I can do it you can do it, for this 57 year old grandmother to do it, anyone can do it. First go to www.familysearch.org. On the top there will be a row of blue tabs and it says order/download products, click on that blue tab. Another screen comes up and in the middle of that page it will say software downloads/free, click on that. It will ask you what language you want and the english language is free as well as the multi-language. Those would be numbers 77062988-s english language or 77062000's multi-language. The software is very easy to operate and you can begin using it and typing in your information. You will say to yourself, why didn't I do this sooner it was so easy. This makes it easy to keep track of your data/history and share it with friends, family etc and for you to see your progress. It also encourages you to do lateral research because you have a place to put everyone. It's like running a home, once you have adequate storage you know where to find everything, a place for everything and everything in it's place.

Genealogy software works just like storage, it's storage for our ancestors, a place for everyone and everyone in their place, neatly availabe for us to find them and place them with their respective family members.

Thank you for sharing your experience with genealogy software and more importantly your analogy of such software and storage in one's home. It is a very vivid and valid analogy.

Just to share another story, this is how I got started with genealogy. My father asked me to help him organize information that he had so he could create a chart of some sort for a family reunion... if I had only known what I was getting into when I volunteered for the task and downloaded PAF...

My only mistake was to start entering names as quickly as possible without entering appropriate source information and details as to conjectures I was making along the way when the source documents did not explicitly state a relationship... Now it has become a real headache to fix what could have been done right from the onset with very little additional efforts. So my advice to anyone starting out is to document everything... PAF and other software has places to put notes and sources and these should be used extensively. You will thank yourself a few years down the line, not to mention that generations after you will thank you profusely as they review your work.

Hi Arturo & Alicia,

Reading your messages brought back memories of how I started with genealogy
a few years ago......I wish I had taken it a little slower and CITED ALL MY
SOURCES instead of making "little notes here and there"......I still have
those notes but some have no dates, no places, nothing but info......and it
really does not mean much to me unless I have something to at least jog my
memory.........thank goodness I started putting dates and little notes like
"my conversation with Aunt Mary at her house on January 10, 1996" and this
brings me back to that time and sometimes I can remember other bits of info
that I now write down in the "notes" section of my software. It is all a
learning process and I am always learning something every day that I do my
research.

No ONE person will ever know it all but we can learn from others such as we
do in this group. That is one reason that Nuestros Ranchos is growing and
growing.......we all have the same passion and thanks to people like Arturo,
Joseph, Alicia, Erlinda, Jonathan, Marge and the MANY OTHERS who are so
generous and share their knowledge, we are able to see our family trees grow

Arturo,

You are welcome, it is always my pleasure to help out and because I am self taught on the computer, most everything I have learned is by trial and error and believe me there has been much error but every mistake I make allows me to learn something new. If I didn't take the risk and try something, I would not learn something new.

Dear Grupo, You guys need to realize and appreciate how truly blessed you are! You have been able to make family connections and share information. Everyday I read every email, even the ones I struggle with in Spanish. Every week I go to my FHC and find absolutely nothing. If it weren't that the only documented family members are in Panuco, Zacatecas, I'd think I'm in the wrong group! I need to share my experience, because I don't want the group to think that I don't care to share or don't work on my genealogy. It's just not happening. If there are any Santelices, Valerramas, Candelas, or Onates from the 19th to 20th century that I could connect with; I'd love to hear from you. Take care and continued success. Alice

I have been reading your messages to other members where you are looking for information on the Delgados of Pinos, Zacatecas. I was just looking at your file folder and it is very difficult to understand. Do you think you could put it into a pedigree, register or some other standardized format so that other members can better understand the relationships between the people listed?

It looks like you have already gotten pretty far back, but only on one lineage. It is sometimes helpful to expand a bit horizontally, as you will find that tracking the wife's family sometimes leads to the husband's family and vice-versa.

The Delgados were definitely in Pinos for more that one generation. I found the following entries in IGI that appears to be the baptism records for a brothers of Bartolome Delgado, born in 1684 and 1687. I imagine that their parents were married sometime around 1680. There is a Salvador Delgado who was married to a Maria de Contreras and having children around the same time which would lead me to believe that both the Contreras and Delgados were in Pinos. It may be worth ordering the film to see if there is any more information that you can gather from these baptism records.

Francisco Delgado of Pinos, Zacatecas appears in a dispensation in the Sagrada Mitra de Guadalajara. He was apparently widowed from Petra de Chavez by 1700:

Pinos, Zacatecas: Junio 1 de 1700. Expediente 99. 9 fojas.

Sagrada Mitra de Guadalajara, Rollo 168358 OAH parte 2, Matrimonios, hojas sueltas 1636-1707, Segunda serie, 1 de junio de 1700.

I would strongly recommend you order this film as it is likely these two individuals were related and that the documents would have extensive genealogical information.

In addition, you should probably order the informacion matrimonial film for Pinos that is likely to have Francisco's first marriage record around 1680:

Información matrimonial 1640-1699 FHL INTL Film 1095797

It looks like you have many leads, but lots of film reading to do. I also suggest you start entering all of this information into PAF or some other genealogy software to keep it (and the sources) well organized. It will also help you branch out to do some horizontal research to look into some of the materanal lines.

P.S. There was a Delgado in Zacatecas as early as the mid 1500s. Juan Delgado was the encomendero of El Teul, Zacatecas and his descendants were large land owners in the region of Tlaltenango and Tepechitlan around 1600.

MY dearest, dearest Arturo,

I cannot beginnnnn to thank you for the information you have just given me!!!!!!!!!!!!

And, yes, I believe I am the only one that would understand the way I have outlined the generations, but I will be very, very, very frank with you; I know of no other way. I wish there were some classes that I could take locally, but I know of none.

I have compiled a booklet on the DELGADOS, but I just go down generation to generation, to my great-grandchildren. (I copied that method from an illustration I saw in the genealogy department at my library).

As soon as I get back from my vacation in Veracruz, I will order the films...

Many thanks again!!!!!!!!!!!!

Juanita (and other new members):

While it is somewhat difficult to understand the standardized genealogy reports at first, it is really worthwhile to try to use them from the onset. The easiest way to do that is to simply download PAF or some other free genealogy software and enter the names, dates, place names AND SOURCES that you have. The software produces any one of the reports Joseph and I have mentioned, i.e. Ahnentafel, register, etc.

Once you start seeing the way the software organizes and reports the information you will start seeing the logic behind them.

The Ahnentafel and Pedigree reports go backward (ancestors of a person with each generation having twice as many people as the previous), while the register format goes forward, showing the descendants of a person, with each generation having less or more (usually) than the previous. If you download the Nuestros Ranchos User Guide, there are examples of all of these types of reports in an Appendix.

Juanita, all of the films that I listed are available through the Family History Library and you can order them at your local Family History Center. While they may be hard to read and in some cases the information may be difficult to locate on the film, it is really the ONLY way to do serious genealogy. Taking information from books is often unreliable and leads to selective "borrowing" of research rather than original research focused on what you are genuinely interested in. Genealogy is not easy work, but if you have the passion and will, you need to just stick to it. It gets easier reading the handwriting and scanning through films as time goes on.

The baptisms should be organized chronologically so they should be easy to find. The informacion matrimonial will likewise be chronological and since you don't have the date, you will have to spend some time scanning the probably year range but it will be well worth it once you find the information. The dispensa matrimonial (Sagrada Mitra) is a bit disorganized but I can send you context information that should make it easier to find the right section of the film.

The way I found all of this information was simply by using the Films section of the Nuestros Ranchos website, which has all of the batch numbers for Pinos, Zacatecas listed. Just click on the IGI button next to any of them and it will give you all of the names on the film, then you can limit the list of names by surname, father's name, etc.

The Sagrada Mitra entry is from Luz Montejano's book which is probably the singular most valuable publication for genealogists focused on our region.

I am glad that I could be of help. I only ask that as your research progresses you share it with others. A sort of gift forward. One crucial step for this is learning to organize the information in a manner that is useful for others.

Arturo,

Again, many thanks!!!!!! I AM familiar with the types of records you mentioned, as I had my genealogy, backto the DARK AGES, if you can believe that, done by CHRIS RENDON. He is extremely knowledgable, like you, He is coordinator, or something like that, for SAGA. I actually met him in SANTA BARBARA last year, and hope to see him again in Spring..

You sent me a gold mine. And, yes, I would be most happy to share all I have - 10 generations, so I am going to do what you suggest and hope I can do it.I have been working on this name for years so I cannot just let it go. Once these people got to Tamaulipas in the early 1700's, it was almost like a piece of cake.

I am just jumping with joy!! Thanks!

Arturo,

I was so excited to read your information I forgot to ask some pertinent questions.

Are the films you mention from LDS?

I do realize the amount of time and deciphering you have to do with those films. I ordered one film and it was sent to Santa Barbara and I have to be honest. I did not stay long enough on it. It was not the best film. But I will certainly give it another shot.I am really very
interested in getting to the roots. The rest was sort of easy, tracing the DELGADO that came down to the TEXAS COAST, to TAMAULIPAS, NUEVO LEON and then ZACATECAS.
I found great information in the book FUNDADORES de NUEVO LEON, in our library.

Another question: In the Expediente 99, Informacion matrimonial: Juana Delgado Valenzuela, originaria de la Arjonilla, Obispado de Jaen en los Reinos de Castilla.Where would that be? Spain, or in New Spain?

Also, how did you retrieve this information so fast? Now you can see how "dumb" I am.

Yes, you are so right about researching horizontally. I think I sort of avoided that since I was working on three different lineages, and I thought I couldn't afford to spend mroe time on any new people. I thought, "Now, I'll never be finished".

I did just a couple of times: I found JUAN JOSEPH DELGADO in the 1780 census of REVILLA, TAMAULIPAS, who's wife was MARIA MARGARITA SANCHEZ DIAZ. When I looked up more on her I found her father was JUAN BAUTISTA SANCHEZ, brother of TOMAS SANCHEZ, the founder of LAREDO, MEXICO.Those censuses sure do tell a lot.

And I really went back to the ancestry of MARIA JOSEFA GUTIERREZ de LARA, who

Saving and storing records

Forums

Like many of you I wish I had known back then what I know now abt saving and citing records.. I am learning from my mistakes and only making new mistakes!

My husband had repeatedly told me to back my files up in a place other than my laptop but I didn't listen so when I turned off my virus scanner and got a worm that wiped out everthing I had entered in the last 6 months I was very depressed.. I had my records from previously backing up 6 months before on a different computer. I lost photo's that I'd taken 2 years collecting from relatives on visits to California and I lost almost 5,000 names. Luckily I did still have the film records so it's been a matter of re-entering them for the past 6 months, a very hard task since I'm not sure what I entered during that time making going over the film notes one by one..

Availability of Mexican Parrish Records

Comment

I believe that there is only one library not affiliated with the Family History Library in Salt Lake that has interlibrary loan privileges to their films. I can't remember which library it is at the moment.

There are films that were filmed by organizations other than the Utah Genealogical Society (whose records the Family History Library holds) and these may be available at other libraries, but your best bet is to simply go to a local family history center.

Hello Maureen,

I don't know if they have any digitzed copies available for viewing online. I have never tried looking for that. The Mexican Inquisition records they hold are the original documents. They don't allow the originals to be handled by the public, but they have microfilmed them. If a copy of a microfilm has already been made it can be requested by interlibrary loan. However, they have very strict requirements and only loan to certain libraries. If you can't get it through your local library they give you the option of purchasing a copy of the microfilm for $40.00 plus the cost of shipping. For a description of this collection follow this link: http://bancroft.berkeley.edu/collections/latinamericana/inquisition.html

I have viewed this particular microfilm before and can tell you that the book "Fundadores de Nueva Galicia" contains extractions from it.

Can you give us some more information about the marriage? Who did Ramon marry and what was the exact marriage date? David Serna has the Calvillo marriage film for that year on indefinite loan, but there is no Ramon Elizalde on that film. Where did you get the marriage information.

Also, you should not assume that he was born 20 years before the marriage since people often remarried, sometimes very late in life.

I was just looking at your folder and was having a very hard time understanding who is whose parents. Can you try adding this information in there and putting the information into a pedigree or Ahnentafel chart?

I got this info on IGI and the reasaon I know without a doubt that its them is that I already had a Ramon Elizalde and Anastacia Duran.

Ramon Elizalde and Anastacia Duran
Marriage: 25 Jul 1824
San Jose, Calvillo, Aguascalientes, Mexico

And Arturo I understand and I dont blame you that you couldn't understand my genealogy. I too at first thought it was strange. My family very well intermarried with only spanish families, They wouldn't marry mestizos for some reason. So far in my research, I've never seen "so and so" a mestizo on any records. It's usually Espanol for the
people. Which probably eplains why I have skin lighter than a white man.

Elizalde and Duran in Calvillo

Comment

Daniel:

I see the entry in IGI now. It looks like the transcriber had a thing for reptiles... Ramon Lizardo... that is a good one. Anyhow I easily found it with Anastacia Duran's name.

If you go into the Films database, you will see that another member has that film on indefinite loan at their local FHC. Perhaps if you ask him, he may look up the entry for you and save you having to order the film. However if you suspect that you will be looking up more things on the same film, it is worth the $16 investment to order it and keep it at your local FHC.

Genealogy Reports on Macs

Comment

Marge:

The descendancy charts in your file folder are beautiful and so full of information that I you need not worry about fixing or improving them. I believe Joseph was refering to people who have simply listed names without a way of tracking relationships between the names in any coherent manner and/or without dates or locations.

But the fact that you have such beautiful reports and use a Mac brings up an interesting question... what software did you use to produce your charts?

There is a site dedicated to Mac genealogy software:

http://www.macgenealogy.org/

Among the software they list is Personal Ancestry Writer II, which is basically software produced to take over the PAF Mac version project after the LDS abandoned supporting it and still provides the software for free:

http://www.lanopalera.net./Genealogy/AboutPAWriter.html

Also, any member can have a personal tree created in the GEDCOM database where they can enter their data so that it is organized and displayed in standard formats. The software produces printable reports as well, though they are not as pretty as those that come out of PAF or FamilyTreeMaker.

Protecting Genealogical Information

Comment

I would just like to say a word of caution. While each of us is probably meticulously referencing our work, we may want to safeguard that information. While it is good to share with those you know are researching the same family and as we know two, three and four researcher sharing information work more efficiently and avoid duplication of the same work, please err on the side of caution. I ran into a woman who regularly publishes her information and she said she knows a someone who sent her information, which was years and years of research, into a website complete with references and someone else took credit for her work. Of course individuals may not care if this happens, but then I felt I should just post a warning.

Maureen, you bring up a very good illustration of the goals of doing genealogy work.. We all have a different agenda on our reasons for putting in years and years of work researching records. It's alway nice when someone credits us with what we've shared with them, some will and others won't, that's the reality of putting it online for others to find. Some do the work and offer their records and research skills for a fee, that's a good thing, I'm always happy to pay for someone else's time if necessary.

When we join a group like Nuestros Ranchos we know that some in the group fit into every catagory, I'm okay with that because of what others have freely shared here I've advanced my own personal research but it's a good reminder to always give credit where it belongs.

Personally I'm in the share for free group and do put my research online in the hopes that my work will help someone else who doesn't have the time or money to reconnect with thier family history. I get e-mails almost daily from people online trying to learn how to find records, do research and learn about thier Mexican ancestors.. We open a door for so many to get started, hopefully what I share is just a start for them and they will just use it as a foundation to further their knowledge and research skills.

I do thank you for the reminder to give credit where credit is due..

New Member Genealogy Listing - Nuevo Listado de Genealogias de Miembros

(Espanol sigue abajo)

Our membership has grown substantially over the last year. We now have over 150 members, and due to Joseph's diligence, we now have genealogies from every member. This made the Members' Genealogy folder listing a bit long and difficult to use so we have decided to split it up into multiple pages and add alphabetical markers on each of the pages.

Hola Tomas,

Que gusto me dio ver tu email...no se por que, pero me suena como que si
eres pariente por lo Castellanos ...de casualidad no conoces a Aurelia
Castellanos Romero ?? Dame mas datos de ti y te podre decir como somos
parientes...me gustaria conocerte.

Mis abuelitos eran:

Jose Refugio (Cayano) Castellanos-Barba
Maria Del Refugio Barba-Barba

Luego te doy mas informacion...

Gracias,

Rafael Castellanos-Castellanos

Hola Rafael,

barba...etc.
