I am new to Nuestros Ranchos. I have already hit a small jackpot in that I found a post with a link that led me to the baptismal records for my husband's maternal grandmother who was born in Colotlan, Jalisco in 1909. I am very excited to have a place that might be able to shed some light on some parts of my husband, Michael's family.

His maternal grandmother, Altagracia Miramontes, (Ramon Miramontes and Maria Jara) was born in Colotlan and lived in Totatiche until the Cristero War. Her father brought his three daughters to Southern California to escape the dangers.

Michael's maternal grandfather, Emilio Valdivia, was in the seminary in Totatiche at the time of the Cristero War. He had to flee to avoid being killed. I am trying to find out more about Emilio and his family. We don't know exactly where they are from, but it might be Totatiche or even Zacatecas.

If anyone has any information regarding this area and these families, I would appreciate any assistance you can give. Thank you for your help.

I;ve been in Los Angeles for the last 12 years caring for my ailing mother who passed away on August 9. My sister and I dressed her the way Petronilla Moctezuma would have dressed for her final journey.

I have found some charts of the descendants of Moctezuma in the Archive of the Indies in Portal Archivos de Espanoles (PARES) that may be of interest to Nuestros Ranchos members:

AGI: MP-ESCUDOS 212

This is a one page chart created after 1594 (exact date unknown). The page is partially damaged on the sides (thus some information is missing), and is headed with Moctezuma, then daughter Dona Ysabel with her three legitimate marriages (Alonso de Grado, Pedro Gallegos Andrade, and Juan Cano).

Her illegitmate daughter by Cortes is not shown.

AGI: MP-ESCUDOS 211 and AGI: PATRONATO 245 R.5

These two documents show the same chart (211 is more legible than 245), but 245 has a narrative of several pages (which is not easy to read; however, the chart is easy to read). This document was made about 1574. This has somewhat less information than the previous chart, but does have additionally children of three of Moctezuma's wives, including Dona Leonore, daughter of wife Acatlan, and her daughter, Dona Lenore alias Dona Marina, who married Cristobal de Valderrama (who is also named in the chart).

These are the earliest documents I've seen that actually name some of Moctezuma's descendants.

There are other documents that provide more detail on the descendants of Pedro Moctezuma, whose descendants moved into the Spanish nobility.

The images are high quality and can be expanded without much lost of detail.

when i was looking up marriage records jose manueel villegas's sister gertrudis i found this page

I see (y me da risa), that baptismal certificates say "hijo legítimo" or
"h.l." Does that mean non-legitimate children (called "natural" right?)
weren't baptized? I cannot find my great-grandmother, but I found (some)
siblings. Maybe she wasn't baptized?

(I originally posted the message below as a reply in my Romo forum topic, but it didn't show up in a google search, so I am resending it here as a separate topic to hopefully make the information easier for someone else to find - who knows, someone may look for Rapahel Silvestre at some point in the future...)

I am still searching for the marriage record for Don Joseph Raphael Romo and Maria Rafaela Aguilar. I have earlier posted some Romo names I have come across. Below is one more Romo which I found in the indexed FamilySearch source. The names of the parents are the same as for Joseph Raphael Prudencio Romo Alba b. 1765. So in other words there were two Raphael Romos born in the same decade, same place, same parents, and the question is which one married Maria Rafaela...then next question is if the Maria Rafaela mother of Manuel Romo who later moved San Buenaventura, is indeed the Maria Casilda Rafaela Aguilar Chaves who was born in Aguascalientes in 1763.

So if anyone out there has the record of birth/christening for Manuel Romo, from Aguascalientes, married to Maria Ygnacia Rodriguez in San Buenaventura, or the marriage record for Rapahel Romo and Maria Raphaela Aguilar of Aguascalientes, please post.

I have been through the Ag. Ag. Sagr. records for 1782 - 1787, and 1787 - 91, minus the ones that didnt show properly (which I am now rechecking) and have had no luck.

I have not been able to explore the church records for the image of Silvestres record of birth, due to technical issues with downloading the images, otherwise I'd of course make it available. But here is the basic info for anyone researching the Romos...

Hola Members y Primos, I believe I have figured out who or which Lorenzo Alvarez I was Investigating. In the second marriage of Lorenzo Alvarez to Gertrudis Efigenia Ramirez de Ramirez ,the Padrinos were Francisco Enriquez and Ana Alvarez(daughter of Francisco Alvarez Tostado and Ana Ramirez de Mendoza. This couple was also padrinos to Lorenzo Alvarez's daughter(Juana Josepha Alvarez) of his first marriage to Josepha Alvarez. The conclusion I have made that Lorenzo Alvarez and Ana Alvarez are siblings.
I still can't figure out who Josepha Alvarez's parents were.

Hola Every one ,seeking out Lorenzo Alvarez Tostado and his first Wife Josepha Alvarez Tostado. Lorenzo was married to Josepha prior to 1725. Lorenzo's second wife was Gertrudis Efigenia Ramirez de Hermosillo april 19,1725 in Jalostotitlan located in Matrimonios 1707-1748 image #191. I was looking at the Dispensas that Claudia has given and no go . I was thinking they were probably related and needed to go through dispensation but have not found it yet. Has anyone had any luck ? I am descended to Lorenzo and his two wives.

When you open my file go to the index and see if I have a surname in the time and place you are looking for. i'm not sure what luciano's dad first name is, nor can i find his mom's late name(i think the entry says her first name is manuela), since the penmanship is too sloppy for me to read.

Thank you.  In my search, I came across those same records as well.  However, without knowing Phelipa de la Cruz's mother's name, I cannot be sure Phelipa de la Cruz and Phelipa Masias are one and the same.  I would like to find a baptism record with Phelipa de la Cruz's mother's and father's name so I can use as cross reference.  Or, Mathias Morones' baptism record with his parents name so I can add another generation.
 
You mention Mathias Morones is your 7th ggfather.  He is my 5th ggfather.  Thank you again.

Regarding Joseph Gregorio Morones b. 1715 married to Leonor Peres about 1736 in Ayo el Chico and who was the patriarch of the Rio de Santa Maria Morones clan:  Records show Joseph's father as being Mathias Morones and mother being Phelipa de la Cruz.  Question:
 
1).  I cannot locate birth, christening or marriage records for Mathias Morones or Phelipa de la Cruz.  Their son Joseph Gregorio Morones was born in Zapotlanejo and Joseph later married Leonor in Ayo el Chico, however, I cannot find further birth, baptism or marriage records for either Mathias or Phelipa.  How do I continue my search to see if they migrated there from another part of Mexico? Do you have any suggestions.  Thank you.

1. Basically it means that the couple shared a common ancestor within four generations (great-great grandparents) and required permission from the Catholic Church to marry. In this case Jose de la Paz and Regina Zermeno’s common ancestor was a great grandparent for one (tercero grado) and great-great grandparent for the other (cuarto grado). This information helps when searching for and confirming that you have the right ancestor.
 
2. Caquiste or Caquixtle was a rancho (puesto) located between Lagos and Encarnacion. 4. In the older records this area was called el puesto Rio de Santa Maria, which later became the communities of Santa Maria de Abajo, Santa Maria de Enmedio and Santa Maria de Arriba. The attached map shows the 3 Santa Marias and the probable location of Caquixtle.
 
Although, I do not have Morones ancestors, they are closely related to many of my ancestors. My paternal grandfather and great grandfather both had a Morones godfather.
 
I have Teodoro’s parents as Leandro Morones and Rosalia Iniguez; Benita’s parents as Jose Maria Morones and Macedonia Valdivia; this and additional generations are in the attached ancestry tree for Ismael Morones.  The patriach of the Rio de Santa Maria Morones clan was Joseph Gregorio Morones married to Leonor Perez, they were originally from Ayo el Chico.  The following website (http://www.jorgemorones.com/morones/index.htm) has a Morones family tree that may help.

The marriage record states that prior to his marriage, Jose Paz lived in
Clito [Clifton] Arizona, it also states that this marriage required a
consanguinity dispensation (tercero con cuatro grado).

What are the traditional foods of Jalisco and for that matter Los Altos?

I remember going to the restaurant El Torito during lunch in high school here in Southern California in the 1980's and having my anglo friends ask me what certain items on the menu were. Tortilla soup? Stacked enchiladas? Fajitas? Rolled tacos? Chimichangas? Wet burritos? I remember saying, "What the hell is this? Must be the chef's menu from a previous position he held as a cook at Chino prison."

Our food at home was and still is:

Albondigas (meatball soup)
Fideo (pasta soup)
Picadillo (shredded beef with potatoes)
Steak Picado (bisteak meat with tomatoes, onions, and peppers)
Carne Asada (grilled meat and large green onions with no marinade)
Conchas (large pasta shells with onion, tomatoes, and peppers)
Caldo de rez (beef stew. I've heard it called cocido by other peeps)
And the main staple in the upper cupboard, cheese. That weird smelling stuff shaped like a round yellow cake. I used to stand behind my dad wearing a gas mask as he would make quesadillas.

So my question again is, "what are the traditional foods?" Is what I've mentioned above part of that or is it our assimilation here in the states? And what about the strange Mexican restaurant food I still come across now and then?

The Colonial era of Mexico facinates me. I am curious about those carriages that were used for transportation. I saw one in a museum in Zacatecas.

Also I am curios about the styles of clothing. For instance, the triangular colonial hats that they wore and also another style where some of the men wore scarf or cloth covering the scalps of their head. Kind of like what pirates wear.

On the mexican 50 peso bill, the picture Jose Maria Morelos wears one.

Can someone tell me what do you call that style of cloth that people from the colonial days wore covering the scalp of their heads? It is like what the pirates wore.

If there were a Nuestros Ranchos Colonial Costume party, what style would you wear?

I am researching the link between the Romo family of San Buenaventura and Nadadores in northern Mexico, and the Romo de Vivar family of Aguascalientes.

I have found out that a man named Don Jose Raphael Romo and his son Manuel, both from Aguascalientes, came to Nadadores where Manual married Maria Ygnacia Rodriguez in 1816. Their children were born in Nadadores. However, one of their sons, Don Tomas Romo, married a woman named Maria Luciana Espinosa, and their children were born in San Buenaventura. One of their sons, Don Jesus Romo, married Dona Josefa Bustamante in San Juan Bautista in Lampazos de Naranjo. where most of their children were born, including my great grandmother Genoveva Romo, who as a teenager fled across the border to escape an arranged marriage. In San Antonio, she met and married a man from Italy, but her family from Mexico eventually also came to San Antonio.

The information about the title Don and Dona comes from the marriage records I have seen through Family Search (images of the pages from the marriage books), as did the note about where Jose Raphael and Manual came from.

I am currently reviewing the marriage records for Sagrario, Aguascalientes, late 1700s, trying to find the marriage record for Jose Raphael Romo and Maria Rafaela Agulilar, who is named as the mother of Manual in his record of marriage (she is desceased by that time, 1816). However, it is slow going, as I often get the message "Please try again later". I WOULD LIKE TO FIND OUT WHO THE PARENTS OF JOSE RAPHAEL ROMO WERE.

Therefore, if anyone had seen a reference to a Jose Raphael Romo from Aguascalientes, or a Maria Rafaela Aguilar from Aguascalientes, I would much appreciate a tip (cite the original source and internet link if possible). I have already exhausted the leads in the digitalized records in LDS, which is why the only way forward are the images of the original records, and this forum.

If there is anyone else who has a Romo ancestor from the above-mentioned villages/towns, I would be more than willing to post the genealogy I sent to the moderator of this site.
