I found this interesting site that appears to have an extensive film collection for Latin America on Microfilm. The collection includes periodicals, census records, Politics, religion, Culture and popular belief and much more.
UC Berkley Bancroft Library appears to have the most material to our specific area of research, Jalisco, Zacatecas and Aguascalientes but UT Austin,Stanford and the California UC system also support this project. Unfortunately we just missed this year's conference that was held in late March in the Dominican Republic.

this is a great resource especially if any of the libraries are close to
some of the members (we know that some are).

thanks Alicia,

we need to add this to the links area.

thanks,

Did we lose all of you?

I hate to stimulate conversation for the sake of conversation, but. . .

. . .I really would appreciate you emailing back to the list if you get
this message.

If you get this message just click "reply" change the Subject and send
me your favorite recipe for hand made Tortillas de Harina or tell me the
name of your latest great grandchild who just happens to be a direct
decendant of your GGGG grandfather from Los Altos de Jalisco or explain
to me some of the unusual things that your parents did that might have
been folklore and tradition coming from generations ago in Mexico. .
.for example. . .Every once in a while my Mom would be doing her thing
and suddenly she would in a hightened voice say, "Mijo vengase aqui." I
would come to her and she would put her hand in my pocket and have this
look of discomfort on her face. Well on the surface this would appear
strange until you heard the "rest of the story." Seems that at these
time of hurried action she would suddenly be struck with a big "itch" in
the palm of her hand. . .it didn't happen often but when it did this was
a "sign" to her that Money was near. So she would find her closest child
and transfer that money into one of their pockets while at the same time
suffering the discomfort of having the itch in her palm.

Sounds strange, but my Mom would do things like that and to us it was
normal.

So did any of your Mom's ever pass on their thoughts and traditions and
beliefs via their "old country" way of thinking?

Joseph, I'm still here....

No great story but something my grandmother Juanita Sanchez Castanon, originally from Jerez Zacatecas, used to do. She was a very religious Catholic woman but when she prayed she liked to go out in the backyard and face north, south, east and west when saying the rosary. She said she wanted her prayers to reach all her family and she didn't know where they all were. It sounded very Indian to me and very indearing..

Joseph,

I'm here and I got your email.
Whenever I get an "itch" on the palm of my hand (not very often) I almost
invariably get remembrances from my childhood and what we were told about
money coming our way. Needless to say, what we were not told by our old
folks is that the itch money comes and then leaves rather quickly. JJJJ.

Yes, she did but they were all Scots or Irish superstitions--don't
cross 2 knives--there'll be a quarrel; if your ears itched, someone was
talking about you. There was a similar one about money and an itching
hand...it depended on which hand itched whether you were getting or
giving money. Marge:)

Add Your Films on Nuestros Ranchos

As some of you have noticed, one of the new functionalities of the new Nuestros Ranchos site is the films database. The database allows you to search the IGI and VRI indices on familysearch.org simply by finding the name of the relevant municipality and the relavant dates. The database also has information on films that members have on permanent loan at their local Family History Centers.

Latest grandchild

My wife Gloria and I are still here, Xossef. You can't lose us that easily. We're slow but steady...como las tortugas. We don't have any great grandchildren yet. Our latest grandchild is Elena Lin, 8 months old. Her father is our youngest son, Eduardo Mateo Cancio DELGADO Calvillo. Her mother is Janeen Louie Wong, fourth generation Chinese-American. Elena's GGGGGGGGGParents are: Pedro de Campos and Xacinntta de Espinossa from Pinos, Zacatecas. I estimate their birth at 1660/1665. That's on my father's side. Gloria would have to do her own calculation for her side.

David,

thanks to you and to all the others that have replied. I wanted to see
just a little response. . .I was having visions of everyone quitting the
Nuestros Ranchos group, but I can see that there is still a few getting
and replying to messages. Thanks.

Un abrazo a Elena Lin. . .what a wonderful story she will have to learn
about her history. Boy one day she will be 90 years old and think of her
Grandfather David and Grandmother Gloria and remember what a great gift
they passed on to her. . .the gift of her history. Our history is such
an important gift especially in times when some don't even know their
grandparents.

Saludos a la familia,

xossef

ps: wow I thought I'd google xossef and came up with next to nothing
other than this math professor. cool.

I have posted a couple of chapters of a book I just purchased in the Files section. For anyone interested in historical ethnography or the issue of castes and slavery in Mexico, it is the seminal work on Mexican black ethnohistory.

The book is a wealth of primary source materials on demographics and the ethnohistory of colonial Mexico.

I have included the two parts with the most numerical data but there are other chapters with excepts from archival documents on the daily life, social mobility, etc. of blacks and other "castas" in Nueva Espana.

>From the jacket:

The first edition of this book, only six years after the expansion continent-wide of the indigenist movement born in Mexico, rediscovered our portion of America and that in her veins ran not ony indigenous blook, mixed with the white heritage that came with the European conquistadores, but also that which was imported from a part of Africa.

Comment

Arturo,

I have Acrobat and can turn the text so it won't be sideways. Should I
do that? What do you think?

I am definitely going to try to make it to the Hispanic conference in October as well. I have been meaning to look through the same films you are going to be researching. Since the informacion matrimonial is not indexed, I imagine you will be scanning through the films or do you have approximate dates of marriages that you will be looking up?

I think that those films are the source of the ever-elusive information that I am looking for on the marriage of Isabel de Covarrubias and Jacinto Talamantes since Jaime Holcombe writes that they were vecinos de Zacatecas and the man he cites as Isabel's father would have been working as a familiar de la Santa Inquisicion in Zacatecas when she was born and married.

Can we possibly collaborate on searching through these films? I am sure there is tons of information on a lot of the old Zacatecas families on those films.

I scrolled through two of the films in a more recent time frame for
Zacatecas, Zacatecas Informacion Matrimonial. I can't remember exactly
but a majority of what i found was information for Indio's. I hope the
earlier films include the Espanoles. Actually occassionally i found
reference to an Espanol and Indio(a) marrying or Mestizo's marrying an
Indio, but I don't remember any Espanol/Espanol marriages. Like I said
my films were later and in the time period you are researching I hope
all groups are represented.

oops you caught me. I am new to this site as well and you all found out
that I made a mistake in posting that story there. It was sent out as
one of the special features of the website. What I should have done was
put it in my folder or send it as an email. If you go back in you'll
notice that I have deleted that story because it wasn't suppose to go on
the front page anyway. I'll figure out the best place for it in the next
few days and repost it.

But really anytime you see something that you want to comment about just
pick which ever of the 3 email distribution lists you think is
appropriate and post to them:

general@nuestrosranchos.org
announce@nuestrosranchos.org
research@nuestrosranchos.org

Sorry for the confusion. . .estoy aprendendo tambien.

Hello,

I just wanted to ask, who all in the group lives in Arizona.

Jonathan

This is probably a good opportunity to bring to light the new user profiles functionality of the new Nuestros Ranchos site.

IF everyone were to fill out their user profiles, Jonathan could simply go to the website and type "Arizona" in the search box, then click on the "Users" tab and it would bring up anyone who was located in California.

Alternatively, to get a simple listing of users from a state you could use the following URL (changing California for whatever state or country)

http://www.nuestrosranchos.org/profile/profile_state/California

The user list is only viewable to members when they are logged in.

If you have not yet done so, PLEASE go to the new site and fill out or update your user profile. This is an essential part of the site and without it, we loose out on a lot of networking opportunities. To do so, click on the "My Account" menu item (from top-right menu block) and then click on the "Edit" tab.

If you would like detailed information on filling out your user profile, see the Nuestros Ranchos users' guide (work still in progress) in the Reference Materials section of Files on the new site:

03/31/2006---Ranchos Yahoo Closing

On the 31 March 2006 the Ranchos Yahoo group will cease to function as a
group.

At this point we have roughly 40%-50% of the group members moved over
(this is not good news).

So after that date any messages you post to the email address

Joseph,

What is the current policy about registering new members?. I know of a
person who was rejected when trying to register in the new site. No sense
in registering at Yahoo now either.

Ranchos Yahoo Closing: CountDown - 3 Days to Go

Don't worry. . .soon the group will be back to what most will consider
to be normal. As far as email delivery I don't think anyone will be
able to tell the difference between the Yahoo Ranchos and the Nuestros
Ranchos sites. (And yes those pesky double postings will stop, but
during this transition time they have been necessary). The main thing
is that you subscribe yourself to one, two or all three of the email
distribution lists and then "reply" to those confirmation emails.
Hijola, aren't you guys getting tired of hearing of those confirmation
emails? Once that is done you will never have to do anything again
unless you decide to change from individual emails to Digest or from
Digest to individual emails. In fact if you are ever going on vacation
or just don't want emails sent to you there is an option to set you
subscription to "no mail" and then you can just go to the
http://nuestrosranchos.org site and read the messages online.

Anyway like I said on 31 March 2006

(no subject)

I think this one has let me in?

Dispensation Record Look-Up Request

Comment

Emilie,   Have you tried to order the film for that date and Parish under Informacion Matrimonial. It is usually recorded right about the time they were married in Informacion Matrimonial. They record it when they first make the request to get married and then again when the dispensation is issued and granted just before they get married. They would usually marry about 3-4 weeks after the dispensation was granted and the bans had been posted in the parish and occasionally I have seen some documents that state they were married before posting the bans due to urgency of some sort.   Alicia Avelar Olmos de Carrillo

Juliana Valdes on 7/26/1829 in Tepetongo, Zacatecas.  He was born in Salitrillo in 1809 and she was born in Aguichote (sp?) in 1813.  His parents were Paulin Olague and Espiridiana [Maria del Espiritu Santo] Mata, her parents were Jose Maria Valdes and Dionisia Zuniga.  The padrinos were Anto. Olague and Tomasa Olague, the witnesses were Don Antonio Gomes and Fernanda Vaes.   In the body of the marriage record there is a statement that I roughly translate to: "required dispensation for the 4th degree of affinity").  I would like to see the dispensation record.
thanks all,   Emilie Garcia, Port Orchard, WA ---

general Digest, Vol 2, Issue 18

Linda,
what I found is that when I posted my info on Ancestry.com's website,
soon after, the info I had provided was being offered for sale.
I have a cousin who had the same experience.
Therefore, I have learned: do not give ancestry.com ANY info: they will sell it back to you and to anyone else they can.

Yes I realize that these daily messages have been a bit of a pain. .
.believe me they are a pain for me too. But I feel the need to make sure
that no one has any excuse for not understanding THAT on 31 March 2006
the Yahoo Ranchos group will be closing to email distribution
communication.

I expect that some will not make the move over to the new site. . .call
it a self removal from the group. I've emailed everyone in the list that
wasn't moved over so I feel comfortable that no leaf has been left
unturned. Then again shortly after the 31st I expect some to "suddenly"
wake up and say, "what happend to Ranchos?"

If you are currently a member of Ranchos you are automatically a member
of the Nuestros Ranchos group. It is not like you need to apply for
membership you're already in. If someone doesn't know about the closing
yet here is the information you need to get yourself a password so you
can log in:

http://www.nuestrosranchos.org/node/13819

Please DO NOT create a new account. Your account is already set up with
your YahooGroups userid but you will have to request a new password in
order to log in. The new password will be sent to the email registerd on
your YahooGroups account and once you receive your password you can log
and change it to whatever they like. In order to do this:

1. From the main page, click on "Request New Password" just below
the login area.
2. Enter your YahooGroups username or the email address registered on
YahooGroups ranchos.
3. Click on e-mail new password.
4. You will receive an email with your new password.
5. Log on with your YahooGroups username and the password received in
the email.
6. Click on "My account" (Second or third sidebar menu item)
7. Click on the "Edit" tab and enter new password (in both fields
provided) and click submit.
8. Review other information in the Account Settings category. Change
your language, time zone, etc. as necessary. Please do NOT change
your email address. During the transition, the email addresses
registered on this site and on YahooGroups must match or messages
will be rejected by one site or another. This restriction will be
lifted once the transition is complete.
9. Review the information in the Personal Information category. Enter
your name, location and geographic areas and surnames of research.
10. Review the Mailing Lists settings, and subscribe to the mailing
lists per the instructions below. This is very important. If you
do not sign up for the mailing lists, any messages that you post
will not get distributed to the group!

Instructions for signing up for the mailing lists is as follows:

1. Click on the mailing lists menu option on the right hand menu or
click on the mailing lists menu item when editing your account in
step 8 above.
2. Click on the type of subscription you would like for each of the
three mailing lists. You must initially subscribe to receiving all
email or daily digests. Once you have gone confirmed your
subscription (next step) you can change back your settings to "No
Email" which allows you to send messages to the list but not
receive any messages from the list, i.e. you will be able to read
messages only by going onto the website.
3. You will receive a message asking for confirmation of your email
address for each of the mailing lists to which you subscribe. If
you sign up for all three, you will receive three separate
messages. Simply reply to each message to confirm your subscription.
4. Once you have registered for a list, the messages that you post
will get distributed to the group. You can post in any of the
three Forums or via email to any one of the three lists and the
messages will automatically get posted to the website and get
distributed to those signed up for the new Nuestros Ranchos list
as well as the old YahooGroups list. The posting addresses are
general@nuestrosranchos.org, research@nuestrosranchos.org, or
announce@nuestrosranchos.org.
