I think that beginning with the Porfirian government and certainly after the Mexican Revolution, the state developed its own civil registries and census functions and attempted to usurp these functions all together from the Church.

I would imagine that a census from 1930 by the state would be one of the first ones for that area. I know that in Totatiche, the post-Revolutionary government did a land census around 1920 that is quite good. I found out through that that the little land owned by my father's family in Mexico actually was his grandmother's, which she had inherited from her father.

That then led to me to research inheritance patterns and as it turns out, just like surnames, land did not transfer down the male side only... Lots of powerful women inheriting land, especially in the earlier days of the colony.

Wow Emilie, there sure are quite a bit of films I noticed that they even have films from Durango, and many for the Chihuahua, newspapers archives. I need to find a person at UTEP that has a good grasp of what the films contain and where they are located. I saw many Ayuntamiento films on the list. What a huge playground and what's great is that you can copy a page from a film and download it to a flash stick, for free. Thanks again for the heads up!

Go to your nearest FHC and do a Library Catalog search under El PASO. Under the subjects you will see an entry for IMMIGRATION. Press on Immigration and do a look for DETAILS. You will see a list of FILM #s. Go to the year you areinterested in. Then rent it.

About 3 weeks ago I heard about this story from a reunion of people from Teocaltitan de Guadalupe (AKA Tecua), Jalisco. The reunion was in Sacramento and Tecua is a small town near Jalostotitlan, Jalisco, Mexico.

Thank you for sharing that breakthrough!! I feel very happy for you and yes we have all been there. It begins with a small whisper somewhere in our subconcious and before we know it we start to put a voice to that small whisper that asks many questions and has few answers. We begin putting together the stories and legends we've heard from our relatives.

Some of us feel it as a hunger to know where we came from and why are we here. In my case I was born in Mexico and was brought to the US at 2 years of age as an undocumented alien as some would now call us. As relatives would arrive my parents would say this is your tio or tia....Oooh so many tias and tios that I would ask why or how is it my aunt or uncle. Some were clearly aunts and uncles but most I could not see the connection and was told, "No seas tan preguntona" "Don't be so nosy" as if that would satisfy my curiosity.

The years went by, I married a third cousin that I did not know was my cousin. We had our children, they married anglos and I felt a sense of loss and detachment from my culture. Something kept pulling me back to my ancestors and I answered the call. Mostly I wanted to know something about my father-in-law's family as my husband never knew anything about his paternal relations.

In January of 2004 I announced to my family that I was gifting myself a trip to Salt Lake as a birthday gift, to begin my genealogical research in earnest. When In Salt Lake, I found the birth record of my father-in-law's brother, Julian Carrillo Jauregui. I know the earth stopped spinning for a fraction of a second in jubilation for this the first of many great finds. To date I still have not found a birth or baptism record for my father-in-law Antonio Carrillo Jauregui who was believed to have been born around 1901 in Nochistlan, Zacatecas. This has not dampened my spirit, on the contrary, it's what keeps me going. It's like a drug, each find compells you to keep digging and sends you off into new areas of research.

John Robles, I wish you continued success in your research and know that this is just the first of many breakthroughs. Now you can do the happy dance as most of us have done.

I found this file very interesting since I've taken my maternal lines back to Tlazalaca and Chilchota Michoacan during the same time period you have. I see you have found them in Guadalajara before 1620 or so. I am on a month long vacation across the states but will order the Tlazazalca films when I return to Everett Washington in Dec. Like yours, my ancestors left Michoacan and went to Jalisco but later than yours, mine did not leave Michoacan until late 1700's. My Alvarez del Castillo lines have connections to some of the same surnames you mention..

Hi, Alicia,

I think those batches without accompanying film numbers is due to the fact that the transcriber didn't finish the job, and their supervisors didn't review their entries. I used to see some people in our other library (the one they closed) doing transcriptions for the index, and some were very good at it, and others had trouble. I see many examples like yours in my searches too. Maybe Jonathan in Utah can find out what happened on your specific example?

It appears that San Pedro de Gallo was part of the bishphoric of
Durango during this time. It looks to have been more a predisio than
an actual town in the early 1700s... It appears to have been part of
the partido de Nazas, previously known as Cinco Senores. The town did
not have a church until 1787, so there would be no parrish in which to
record his baptism in the town in 1721.
