We are closely related thru these Calvillo families. The Romo de Vivar, López de Nava, Martínez de Sotomayor and Velasco families intermarried heavily in the Valle de Huejúcar. They were four of the most principal troncos in the valley. Anyone that has Spanish blood will connect to them somehow.

I have not seen any documents that list Miguel parents. We know Isabel Rosaura was the daughter of don Gabriel López de Nava and doña Nicolasa de Valenzuela y Soto thru various dispensas, including her own. Doña Isabel Rosaura also married don Joseph Antonio Martínez de Sotomayor y Valenzuela, who is the son of my 9th great grand uncle/aunt. They received dispensa on 27 Mar 1765 in Tabasco, Zacatecas.

Many researchers believe that Juan González de Hermosillo, natural de Guadalcanal y vecino de Jalostotitlán, was the same Juan González de Hermosilla, who, in 1582, petitioned the Casa de Contratación in Sevilla for permission to be allowed to travel to Nueva España, accompanied by his wife and children and a criada. This Juan González de Hermosilla (also written “Hermosillo” in the document), who was the son of Gonzalo Garcia de Hermosillo, vecino de Guadalcanal, had a brother, also named Gonzalo Garcia de Hermosillo, who was living in las Minas de los Zacatecas en la Nueva España, who had written him to join him. The name of their mother is not given.

Supporting this theory is the fact that Juan González de Hermosillo and Ana Muñoz were known to have had a son named Gonzalo de Hermosillo (source: Cofradía de las Benditas Ánimas del Purgatorio de Jalostotitlán, 13 Apr 1637: Se asentó por cofrade Gonzalo de Hermosillo, difunto hermano de Juan González de Hermosillo y de Francisco Muñoz, y dieron la limosna 2 pesos). The younger Gonzalo would have been named for his grandfather. Also, several descendants of Juan González de Hermosillo and Ana Muñoz used the compound surname “Garcia de Hermosillo.”

I wonder if anyone has any info on the Nieto family in New Mexico. Knowing that many of the NM colonists came from Zacatecas area, I wonder if Nieto came from there and is connected to the families discussed here. There was an alcalde Jose Nieto born in 1616 and died in the Pueblo Indian uprising of 1680. His son was Cristobal Nieto, born 1648 in New Mexico.

Felipe de Jesus Alvarez del Castillo was married to Maria Teresa Garcia. One of his sons is found marrying in 1748 in Ayo el Chico, Jalisco. Felipe de Jesus Alvarez del Castillo is also from “rancho Rosa del Castillo.”

Could it be that there is some confusion regarding the family name? In the years 1825 and 1826 there are various individuals with the last name Olibares living in Rosa de Castilla but not a single Albares.

I often go through arhives to look at Texas. In the year 1722 a number of planos of presidios of Texas show up in the Pars website. It concides with a "Meritos" document of Colonel Don Fernando De La Campa y Cos, who was living in the Zacatecas area. In the last page of his meritos document, it states that he supported a 500 man expedition from Zacatecas to colonize Texas on February 3, 1720 with 94,388 pesos. He signs the meritos document dated July 17, 1722.

At this time, The Real Audencia of Guadalajara, Jalisco (Nueva Galicia) had political authority over Texas and a number of other provinces. As well as the Bishop of the Archdioces of Guadalajara that had religious authority.

Texas had Comanches and Apaches in the area. As well as the French who were next door in Lousiana.

I am no expert but it does appear to be a padrón for San Antonio, Texas. I searched PARES and the internet for Toribio de Urrutia, the first householder listed, and the results confirmed it for me.

One observation I have is that the year written in the top left margin is off by 100 years. My reading of the header of the padrón itself is that it states, mil ce-tecientos cecenta y tres (1763).

As Denise noted, Apache and Comanche appear on the padrón, along with the usual casta designations: mulato, mulato libre, esclavo, coyote, lobo, and mestizo. Furthermore, one can see that there are also a handful of individuals labeled frances and flamenco who are likely Catholics of French and Flemish origin respectively.

On image 09, I wonder about the meaning of the word opinado. Is that another casta? The word follows the entries for Pedro Treviño and Gregoria Pérez.

Fascinating find, I think, for anyone interested in the colonial history of the City of San Antonio and of the State of Texas.

I remembered this thread as soon as I saw the Guadalajara marriage record for Antonio Rodríguez Chino de las indias orientales natural de la Ciudad de Vengala.

Makes one wonder what the scribe was thinking here. Could it be Antonio was Chinese or Burmese from Bengal, which is technically not a city but a region? Or have I read it wrong and his surnames are Rodríguez Chino and he is from Bengal or one of its chief cities, like Kolkata (Calcutta)?

My dna shows 4% Indonesian, maylasian + Japan. My paternal oral history has always been that our 3x great grandparents were south East Asian. I was told that they worked the mines in chihuahua early 1800s but have not been able to verify through docs...but the dna is there and some in my family do have features. While I continue to search, I assume they came with the Manila Galleons through Acapulco since Indonesian slaves were included.

I used to wonder about possible immigrants from East Asia to Colonial Mexico via Acapulco, but I never saw any records for them until I started to peruse the indexed dispensas at Valladolid Dispensas. If you search Valladolid Dispensas you will find records for a Chinese man, a Malaccan, and various Filipinos.

I found some info on Sri Lankas early colonial history, back when it was a colony of Portugal. The following is an escerpt from a paper here:

THE CASADOS
Viceroy Afonso de Albuquerque (1508-1515), recognized the problem of a shortage of manpower at an early stage. He sought to overcome this by encouraging the Portuguese to intermarry with the local population. Many Portuguese outposts in Portuguese Asia were inadequately manned. It was expected that the offspring of these marriages would create a population in the colonies loyal to the Portuguese crown. 1

These married settlers were known as casados, and lived in various towns and cities in Sri Lanka. Having married local women, they maintained close contact with the local population. Their neighbours, through intercourse with them, were able to acquire a knowledge of the Portuguese language during the Portuguese period in Sri Lanka. As a result there emerged a group of people in towns who had acquired a smattering of the Portuguese language. This was, however, not a language they had learnt from books or with the help of a teacher. They had only gained familiarity with the spoken language. This colloquial variety was a corrupted form of Portuguese, as among these casados there were Eurasians and mestizos in addition to the settlers from Portugal living in Sri Lanka. The second and third generation of the Portuguese descendents became more and more Ceylonised not only due to mixed marriages but also in their mental attitudes. They continued to use the Portuguese tongue in order to maintain their position as a race separate from the indigenous population and to identify themselves as the ruling class whether they were Portuguese, Dutch or English.

Among these casados the most prominent were the Portuguese soldiers. There were practically no Portuguese women in Sri Lanka. The men who were registered as soldiers moved freely between Portuguese establishments. There were Portuguese traders and merchants. The latter were clearly separated from public officials in Portuguese Asia. They were associated with trade conducted by the state and were allowed to carry a certain weight of commodities free of charge in Portuguese vessels. 2

All these groups lived in the towns, mainly trading centers with very few connections with agriculture in the surrounding area. It is reported that they resorted to fishing in the neighboring sea. They also practiced other crafts such as cobbling, tailoring and other arts and crafts that they were familiar with in their mother country. The later generations continued these trades. They were unable to feed their population without foodstuffs from the interior. In this manner the frontier society also came to use Portuguese language for communication.

The Portuguese did not care to learn about local habits and organization of the society. They have been blamed for their lack of respect towards the 'high castes' in Sri Lanka. They offered duties to other castes which were assigned to high castes. In marriages they cared more about looks and talents than castes. However, it is recorded that even royal princesses, including a queen, had sought conjugal connection with Portuguese men. Therefore it is clear that Portuguese language was not confined just to upper classes but went deep into all classes of the Sri Lankan society.

A number of Portuguese ended up in Mexico. Maybe one individual was a descendant of a Casado pair. I have 13% Portuguese DNA, I also have lines back to Aguascalientes - the Romo line among others (but no South INdian dna).So maybe you are really looking for someone who is identified as Portuguese in records.

Alternatively, African slaves were brought to Sri Lanka and intermarried or had children with local women. It may be a slave descendent of theirs was sold to a Portuguese trader who transported this individual to Mexico. THere were a number of slaves in Aguascalientes area. I do have African dna and have found at least one ancestor listed as esclavo mulatto in church records.

Getting married at nine doesn’t mean that it was consummated then. I found a record that states that an ancestor of mine was considered married at eight, yet it wasn’t consummated until later in life when he was in his early twenties. While still in shock at the marriage at eight, I was surprised that the marriage wasn’t consummated when they were in their teens. Furthermore, this was by far the earliest age given in the marriage of a male. The other early ages that I had found previously belonged to females. Arranged marriages of the past were often made for political and monetary reasons, like keeping the money in the family, or extending the political reach in order to settle disputes and lower the possibility of war.

9 Jun 1801.- "Feliciana española de las Cruces de seis dias de nacida"

Marriage record:
22 May 1811.- "Juan de Dios Martin con Maria Feliciana Lara españoles de los Corrales y las Cruces"

Felicina got married at 9, about 2 weeks before her 10 birthday on 3 Jun 1811.

The youngest age of a bride that I have seen is age 14 or 13. The marriage was at beginning 1700's, it needed the approval from the father and a dispensation because of the age of the bride. 10 to me is too young specially for 1800's. Just a thought...

Existe un libro muy detallado sobre la vida de Don José de Escandón llamado "El Conde de Sierra Gorda do José de Escandón y la Helguera: militar, noble y caballero" de Jesús Mendoza Muñoz.

Don José pasó a la Nueva España en 1715, a la edad de 15 años residiendo en Yucatán e incorporándose al ejército. El matrimonio con Dominga Pedrajo no corresponde a la época en que él ya estaba en Nueva España y además casado.

El 9 de diciembre de 1724 contrajo matrimonio en Querétaro con Doña María Antonia de Osio y Ocampo, hija de Don Agustín de Osio y Ocampo hija de una rica familia de Querétaro y tuvieron dos hijos: Don José profesó como sacerdote y Doña Ana María profesó como monja. Su suegro le entregó dote y un gran obraje en donde se fabricaban tejidos de lana, de ésta manera se enriqueció, la esposa murió en el año de 1736.

EN 1737 se casa con María Josefa de Llera Bayas hija de otra rica familia, recibiendo otra dote. Tuvieron como hijos a:el Coronel Miguel de Escandón y Llera, al Bachiller Don Mariano Timoteo, Don Francisco, Doña Josefa María y Doña María Josefa todos de apellidos Escandón y Llera.

I don't have much to contribute other than the padron for Puruandiro, Michoacan from 1668. It will give you an idea of some of the families that lived in the area. You'll find the Vargas (Machuca) Berbers, Alcalas, Cervantes, Villasenors, Orozcos, etc. from this time period and location. Perhaps it might bear some fruit or help to rule out or confirm a theory:

I descend from Petronila Orosco Villaseñor and Alvaro Ornelas el Mozo. Thank you tocayo for identifying her siblings. Hopefully your findings lead to their parents.

Maria de Orozco Villasenor and Jose Sanchez de Mendoza, are the parents of at least two children. Their son Melchor Sanchez de Mendoza is married on 15/May/1687 in Tepatitlán, Jalisco to Isabel Gutierrez De Hermosillo (daughter of Sebastian Gutierrez De Hermosillo Aceves and Maria Galindo (aka Becerra). A second son is Lucas Sanchez De Mendoza married to Josefa Camacho Riquelme.
